Anyone have the cold flow properties of Hav dino on hand??
How does this compare to the new PP for winter use?

The most recent PP specs are:
Platinum 5W-30 Group III (PDS dated July 2006):
MRV, at -35 degC: 14,800
CCS, at -30 degC: 5150
Pour Point, degC: -39

Havoline 5W-30 SM/GF-4 (PDS dated Sept 2006):
10.8 cSt at 100°C
64.8 cSt at 40°C
CCS at -30°C 5,700 cP
MRV not listed
Pour Point -36°C(-33°F)

Do you think there is much difference between the two to justify the extra money for PP for the purposes of extra protection for subzero starts??

Close call...but I think the PP would flow a little better below zero. It may also hold it advantage for a longer amount of time, but I'm guessing. Stick a quart of each in your home freezer and perform your own pour test.

You'd have to decide if it was worth it to you.

Well, I bought the PP and put it to the freezer test against the Hav and the results......a close call, but if it was a photo finish, I think the Hav would have it. I thought both oils were pretty thick for being just below freezing. Which flow stats are best to compare? MRV? I'll have to take a sample of each when I change the oil and retest....

Really???, wow.

Don't need the freezer, just leave the oil bottle outside, it's 22 degree F right now in upstate New York.

I would assume synthetic would flow better than any dino.
