The pictures are interesting. So it seems that the degree of roasting also affects oily appearance. Interesting. I do like the darker roasting. Still confused about the coffee shop I tried that boasted of doing their own roasting, I was so looking forward to tasting it after reading about it, and it tasted terrible to me. Might have to try it again, different variety maybe. Still trying to teach an old dog new tricks.

Good post, that.

However, I'll agree with the part of local roasting. I recently tried some "local roast". It was dodgy and ended up in rubbish bin straight away.

Starbucks Guatemala and Caribou Costa Rica are still my favourites. However, Starbucks Sumatra is quite intense and is something I enjoy maybe once or twice a year.

I don't like coffee or didn't that I did until I tried some Kona Blue Mountain last month when on Kauai. It was pretty good for coffee. I had tried their yellow catuai when I was out on Kauai a couple years ago, & it was disgusting. They now blend their red catuai with their yellow catuai. I imagine the stuff on the Big Island is better.

I live in portland, home to the finest coffee roaster in the world (according to me, and I suppose a few others) Stumptown!!!! It is amazing! Best coffee ever! Bar none. They sell blends that start at your average $9.00 a pound and goes up to ummmm i cant remember like $90.00 Its great. I also like this little roaster in newport oregon called newport bay coffee co. They have a blend called narlie boy that is really good. As far as big brands go I like Tullys, and petes in that order. I only make my good coffee in a french press and grind my beans in my burr grinder right before I brew. If is a weekday or im in a hurry I use my keurig k-cup machine or just go to stumptown or tullys.

I'm a coffee-a-holic. I love it, I like Espresso & regular. I frequent Starbucks and Tim Hortons to get my daily fixes and our home unit is always running. I freshly grind my beans at home and have about 10 different kinds on hand all the time so I can switch it up.

When I started having my migraines really bad a few months back I cut the caffeine out almost to 0 to try and determine the source and this just made it worse... After I started drinking coffee again they started to lessen. Then eventually I found out that it was caused my low serotonin and an allergy to MSG. Since I fixed these two problems I'm great and back to drinking my usual 3-4 pots of coffee a day!

Lavazza espresso grind is pretty good. I just found out my local Caputo's and World Market carry it so that I don't need to buy it online anymore.

Try Faema brand. I'm of Italian background, and this is the best out there and most of our relatives use it!

There is also another one that I can't remember the name of that has a silhouette of 2 fingers holding a bean on the package. Black/Gold in colour. This is also a good brand.

Man I need to go have some now...

family jewel.

FYI... I also picked up some Segafredo Zanetti coffee (never heard of the brand before) from the grocery store last time. It's got a particular taste/smell that I'm not too fond of.

You felt so insecure that you felt the need to "deflate" my jocular comment? Uh... yikes!

My "setup" is not a problem, therefor I will not get bent out of shape about your comment and merely deflate it.

Usually the ones who are trying to make others feel insecure, are insecure themselves about their own "setups"

OK, this thread seems to have deviated far enough away that I don't feel too bad hijacking it with this question. Does anyone else think that coffee in paper cups tastes awful? I used to hate Starbucks coffee from their stores until I had some in a ceramic mug. It was like night and day, it didn't have that nasty taste I was expecting. I've now noticed it at other coffee outlets as well.

I don'k know what it is about the paper but I'm convinced it is there. McD's coffee isn't the best, but the styrofoam cup doesn't mess up the coffee like the paper ones.

I find no difference... I have had Tim-Hortons coffee in a ceramic mug and in their paper cup and don't notice a difference, same with Starbucks paper cups or made at home. Same to me...

Could it be the water source at your house compared to the store?

whether it's in your head or not, the utensils used for beverages or food does have an impact on taste,IMHO. a cup of coffee in a proper ceramic mug at home, to me, always tastes better than drinking out of paper or plastic.
one thing that gives a clue: the paper cups usually have a warning to not microwave the cup. I heard from someone that it releases chemicals in the paper.

Are you sure it's not the difference between an open top container vs. one with a lid? Smell is a big part of what we think of as taste. You will definitely miss out on the better parts of the coffee taste if you don't let your nose get near the brew.
