code reader for obd2 and beyond?

Been using the elmscan5 reader with obdwiz software on my laptop to read/reset codes as well as some basic diagnostic scans but would like something a little more advanced. In general I would like to be able to pull abs codes as well as better diagnostic scanning/datalogging for a variety of vehicles. Specifically I would like to include the ability to run a mode 8 or mode 6 test on my 2011 ford.

Short of paying big money for the fancy stuff, can anybody comment on some home User options?

AutoEnginuity is not cheap but is excellent especially if you get the manufacturers specific software.

since you have a ford, and an elmscan5, the reccomended (FREE!) software over @ TCCA (Taurus Car Club of America) is FORscan.
I don't have an elm327 compatible unit, but this software is supposed to be the bees knees...

Get an adapter with a STN1110/STN1170 chip
And use a SW like FORScan.

Adapters are Scantool.net's OBDLink MX & SX
And if you like to support the indy's Indy
Software FORScan

earlyre, have you used forscan much? Tried playing with it the other day and it didn't seem to be functioning very well.

I don't have a compatible reader just yet. (It's still in the mail)

I believe I need to mod my Elmscan5 with some type of MS CAN switch based on the forscan FAQ's. Looks simple just need to do it...

I bought mine pre-modded from one of the Mods @ TCCA. he sells 'em for $29. currently in the mail on it's way to me.

If you have an android phone then the Advantage app with the related manufacturer specific plug in is great and cheap.
