Cat failure is common on this car/4.6L engine setup. I almost bought a used tbird with the 4.6l from a freind who told me in needed a cat. I went to an exhaust shop to see what it might cost to replace it and they told me it was common on this car for the cat to fail.

I don't know...i mean, the 4.6L may have its own typical prob's, but I've never heard of cat.failure as one of them(not saying your source is wrong; i just don't know; the car has 3 cats; which one is supposed to be bad in general? this is supposed be common in ALL 4.6L or just the T-bird 4.6L?)
Also: it depends on the mileage: perhaps at 105k a cat-failure for a 4.6L is not so "weird" as to be categorized as one of the "common flaws" of the 4.6L...if they go out a lot at 25k miles, that's a different story.
is there an "average" total mileage cat.converters are supposed to last in general?
The extended emission warranties are usually for 80k miles, (I think), so 105k may be an "ok" mileage for this to happen...just a thought.

97tbird, from personal experience....
Do not replace cat unless you here the honeycomb matrix inside rattling.
I would replace passenger side upstream 02 sensor.
You can find the 02's and OEM fit converters from NAPA.
