North of PA they salt the roads so much, you are lucky to get 10 years out of a vehicle before is is badly rusted.

Uh, I live just west of Easton PA. And they Salt the roads like it`s going out of style around here. Of course that is about all they do. they sure as [censored] dont fix them,that`s for sure.
My dad just handed me down a 99 Tracker with 160k on it from Binghamton, NY. The undercarriage and front subframe are rusted so bad I had to weld in some steel plate patch panels. The rockers are gone from the rust. A family of cats could live in them. The salt is a complete car killer. Here in Va Beach, rust in practically unheard of. I'm gonna drive it and flog the [censored] outta it until it breaks in two. The engine and trans are in great shape. The 4wd works awesome, and it has hot heat and cold AC. But the body is simply deplorable. Oh yeah, and the oil pan is starting to get really crusty as well. Like I said, I'm gonna pound it till it blows or breaks in two. SO far its been bullet proof.

That's crazy. My 15 year old Z71 doesn't have any rust to speak of. Heck my 69 chevy truck didn't even really have any rust to repair either when I restored it. Both Texas trucks however. We got around 29" of snowfall last winter but around here it may snow a foot and then be 60 F the next day... There's a saying around here "if you don't like the weather just wait a few hours"

At least the upside of all the salt is that it keeps the average age of the area's fleet down... that's good for air quality and the economy.
Well, it's not all doom and gloom in the salt belt. People that really want to keep their cars longer will get it oil sprayed every once in a while, it helps tremendously.
But even without any rustproofing most cars can easily go 10-15 years anyway, they might not look their best, but will do the work.

I think I've posted before that GM will replace the front subframe and maybe it would be a good time to replace the oil pan.

Cav makes the case for simpler is better. It does however seriously lack in the safety department.
I wonder what the actual risk is, of being invovled in traffic accident where vehicle crash worthiness is a factor for preventing injury or death?
Obviously this Cavalier didn't get into even a significant fender bender for the last 290K miles otherwise it would've been written off.
