Hello everyone, From seemingly out of nowhere I've been getting some nasty sounds out of my car. I noticed today that when I'm going slow and there's little or no stress on the engine, I get a horrible clicking/grinding/rubbing noise. Sometimes I hear it clicking, other times grinding, and sometimes it even sounds like someone walking through snow. It seems to be coming from the drivers side by the engine, and is consistent with every wheel rotation. It becomes considerably worse when turning right.

Revving the engine doesn't effect the sound at all, neither does switching gears or pressing the clutch in, so I'm guessing it's suspension based and not engine or trans.

Could it be a CV joint? Any other ideas or easy tests I could run?

thank you!

Sorry, car is a Honda Civic 2001 HX. 193k miles. Manual transaxle. No recent work done besides a new battery and installing an ultraguage, and that was over a month ago.

Any snow packed into the wheel wells?

Typically a wheel bearing will be a continuous noise where a CV joint will have some sort of cyclic repetition to it.

I hope that helps, as diagnosis by Internet is a VERY inexact science!

Look around the wheel well for the CV joint losing its grease or a torn CV boot. Loss of grease/contamination of grease occurs first, then it grinds itself up. If the CV joint looks fine and there's no grease spray then it's likely the wheel bearing.

I took off my front left wheel today and examined the CV joints. The boots were intact and in and good shape. When I rotated the wheel I heard a faint clicking noise coming directly from where the wheel bearing is, but not much else. The tire had no play

I drove around for awhile and didn't hear anything. About an hour in however, it started up again. I did some more testing and can conclude

It happens when going straight
Doesn't make noise on acceleration
Noise stops when braking
Turning right doesn't alter noise, though turning left reduces it
It's a springy squishy sound
It's constant and happens once per rotation

I will upload pics and sound in a bit

Here is an audio clip of the noise it's making. Sorry there is some wind so turn down your speakers!

During the clip I basically accelerate a bit and then coast. The noise is only present when coasting and I'm going slow here. Each noise is about 1 rotation.

Put a jack under the lower control arm, and try to move the wheel up and down with a prybar.

Any vertical movement is a sign of ball joint failure.

Sway bar links are also extremely common causes of noises from the suspension.

until i got to the bottom of the page I thought it was a coincidence that two people had posted the same thread with the same problem!

replied to you on the other thread
