If it was diluted to the lowest level, it should be alright to use.

I used one of the stronger wheel cleaners and Mr. clean eraser on the INSIDE of my wheels to clean off 15 years of brake dust. I would spray on cleaner, set for 1-2 minutes, scrub, rinse and repeat untill clean.
Do not let these cleaners set on the front surface too long as it might damage the front finish as many of these cleaners use acid to help clean.
No problems now that I have ceramic low dust pads.

A lot of people have used magic erasers on alloy wheels with great success. They're just melamine foam, which admittedly is a very mild abrasive. But your other choices aren't much better, those special wheel cleaners aren't exactly mild either.

Meguiar's Hot Wheels...Really did the magic this morning on my dirty Saab alloy wheels.
I have found that keeping the wheels waxed makes them much easier to clean. Then you shouldn't have to use anything stronger than your car wash soap.
I've been using this on my alloy wheels and I LOVE it.

+1 I've always waxed my wheels and had good success with just washing them. Nothing really "sticks" to them, such as brake dust, dirt, etc.

Worked on some insanely crudded wheels today of a Windstar and gave AZ wheel cleaner a shot. Holy cow. That stuff eats through grime unlike anything I've used. +1 from me.
