Cleaning Funnels

All kinds of different ways to clean a funnel. The fastest and most convenient way I suppose would be brake cleaner and compressed air.

That's if you have compressed air available and can afford the price of brake cleaner at over $6 a can just for cleaning funnels.

What other ways are there to clean a funnel?

How do you get the rag down in the narrow area of the funnel; you stick a phillips screwdriver in there and ram it through?
 
A shot of brake cleaner and a wipe down with a red shop towel is how I always do it but I'm open for a better way?

With the shop towel, you're taking a chance on introducing micro particulates with a static charge to the plastic funnel.
 
Similar question. I actually have a couple new funnels I picked up for my Toyota ATF. Do I need to clean them before I use - one is metal with the flexi spout, the other is plastic. Not sure which will work best - first time use?

Time for another thread where we BITOGers can wallow in our obsessive attention to detail..

Oil and coolant are two fluids that need to be filled regularly (but hopefully not too regularly) from the top of the engine bay. Those of us who use a funnel to fill both fluids are faced with a choice:

1) Reuse the same funnel for both coolant and oil.
2) Keep separate funnels for different fluids.

Even when using different funnels for different fluids, you still might have to use your funnels on multiple cars, and thus potentially mix your oils and coolants together (not that this...

For those out there who use your funnels once every few months... What you do to keep your funnels clean since they attract so much dust with a coating of oil on them.

Up until a few weeks ago, I had been just wiping them out each time. But I have some clean 5 gallon buckets laying around from painting the house last summer. So now I put them all in a bucket and put a trash bag over the top of it. I would use the lid, except a couple funnels are an inch too long. When I get around to it, I'll probably replace my long straight funnels with long flexible ones. Then I can use the lid, and...

Thread 'Clean your funnel before pouring new oil?'

I just changed my oil this past weekend, and I have to use one of the long skinny funnels because of fill hole location. It sits in my trunk 24/7 so it gets a little dirty/dusty just from everyday use. It has very little dirt/debris on it when I go to use it, but was wondering if I should hose it off first then let it air dry or will that do more harm than good so just go ahead and use it? After hearing of people leaving their drain plug off for hours, I guess small dust particles are nothing to worry about. Am I being too OCD?

Thread 'Fast funnels'

Anyone use these? Every time I need a funnel their always super dirty with either dirt or sawdust. Usually the latter. I used to buy like 30 packs of three at the local auto parts store. Just called the two parts stores near me and nobody had a clue or even cared to look for it on the computer.

Thread 'stupid question about funnels and adding fluids'

Adding fluids this morning--break, coolant, power steering, windshield wiper.

I decided for the future to use a funnel. Now both vehicles have said to only use dedicated "genuine Honda/Toyota" fluids for all or some of them. I'm ok with that.

My question is: can I use the same funnel for pouring each fluid into that dedicated reservoir? Or is there a problem with mixing trace elements of one fluid into another? If that would be bad---could I simply wipe the funnel clean with a paper towel, or would that not be good enough?

Thread 'How anal are you about funnels ?'

I usually don't clean them after use and then take a rag to them before using again. Sometimes little dirt gets in on the next run (very little). oh well.
