Hi Fellows, I have a question, looking for an oil for my 2008 MB E350 4Matic and was looking at Liquimoly. The one recommended by the company is Liquimoly Leichtlauf High Tech 5W-40 which is a Synthetic-Technology oil with MB approval 229.5

Another is Liquimoly Synthoil High Tech 5W-40 which is Fully Synthetic but carries MB approval 229.3.

Why would an oil that is synthetic-technology carry a later approval than one that is fully synthetic? What are your thoughts and what would you do?

Just because an oil is "fully synthetic" does not necessarily mean it's a better oil. There is more to a properly formulated lubricant than just base oil.

I was thinking of using liquimoly for my kia optima SXL turbo since it calls for a stout 5W-40 I was reading reviews on amazon and nothing but positive opinions and experiences. Leichtlauf in german means smooth running i called liquimoly headquarters. Im thinking about using Liquimoly for 2nd oil change. Im using total 9000 quartz 5W-40 for my first oil change, why don't you give total a shot http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NFFE..._1_2&sr=8-2

All the best Grambo

I use the 229.5 Leichtlauf in the CLK, only because I got a bottle for free and it ended up being a cheap oil change, but I'm going to be interested to see how it holds up to an 8k interval when I sample it down the road vs. M1 0w40.

As far as which to use, I'd always go with the "approved" stuff, a lot of oils like the Synthoil will be "recommended" (IIRC that was the case with this oil) for 229.X, but not necessarily approved and tested by Mercedes to hold up to their rigorous testing specs. The Synthoil may very well be superior oil in every way, but for some reason Mercedes didn't approve it, or it wasn't submitted for testing, thus I'd go with the safer bet, especially if a warranty is involved.

Good catch. Liquimoly Synthoil High Tech 5W-40 isn't officially approved for any MB spec.

Acrually it is, it carries the approval MB 229.3 whereas Leichtlauf carries approval MB 229.5
and this is what puzzled me, why is a fully synthetic not approved for a later car whereas the synthetic technology is. I know liquidmoly is an excellent oil, I was just wondering.

Thank you all fellows for replying to my query.

No, it doesn't. According to Liquimoly's website, it is only "recommended for", and there is a difference. It does not appear on the official MB bevo list of 229.3 approved oils.
