My 4.0L Jeep gets 1 noisey lifter after the oil has been in use for a while.

With Peak, Havoline, Chevron and ST it gets noisey @ 1700 miles like clockwork.

Quaker State green bottle went to 2800 miles before the lifter went clack.

Valvoline MaxLife only made it to 1300 miles.

My last change was Shell Rotella T SAE 30. Just this morning I was thinking to myself that I was @ 2100 miles on that oil and it still sounded fine.

Spoke too soon because I got out of the Jeep at the bank, left it running, walked up to the ATM and I heard it! Started as a slight tick that devoloped into a loud clack, clack as I stood there.

SO I rolled into Autozone and got the Quaker State oil and STP filter special. Bummer because I have gallons of oil at home but none at the shop.

I'm at the shop on BITOG while the Jeep is draining

This time it's getting 5w30 because they didn't have 10w30.

As soon as I pour the new oil in that lifter will shut up and be quiet for atleast 1700 miles, hopefully 2800 like the Quaker State 10w30 did.

I wonder how it knows when to start clacking?

I ran some Rotella once but I can't remember how it did. I have 20 gallons of various 15w40's at home I can try next time.

QS is king! j/k. Actually Pennzoil might do even better.
That is really weird. It's possible the 5W30 might clack sooner though. I think I would add a bottle of Marvel Mystery Oil with the change to see if it cleans out the lifter(s). If that didn't work then I'd go the other way and try a heavier oil like Onmo suggested if you haven't already.

haha my 2.5 is noisy all the time! sounds like a kitchen timer. tic tic tic tic tic...

What if you added some STP? Inquiring minds want to know! I figured the 30 wt would be indestructible.

I'll wait and see how long this oil goes before it gets clicky and maybe try some STP. I've considered putting a bottle in now. Jeep calls for 5w30 below 32F only.

I thought that the HDEO 30wt would last several thousand miles more.

Sounds like the leaking lifters in my Chrysler mini van. Quiet until the oil probably sheared down enough to start leaking and then wouldn't pump up. If this is the case no cleaner will fix it.

Chris,

My '90 Cherokee with the 4.0 started doing that several years ago at about 100,000 miles. It's at 196,000 miles now, with no failure.
