Hello all,

In reading some posts on CK4 vs CJ4...there was some talk or implication they could bottle CK4 in CJ4 bottles? Was concened if I stocked up more on CJ4 could there be a chance CK4 could be in there? Thanks.

Shell would I bet. The reason I say that is because they were dumping GTL in PYB conventional, and the PQIA test results prove it.

Ok...Shell was the reference. Was curious if Mobil could or would do something like that? Might stock up again on Delvac 5w40 CJ4...was concerned if companies typically put CK4 in CJ4 bottles until supplies are out...don't want to run CK4 in my 6.7 as Ford doesn't like it.

Yes, if purchased since around beginning of November or late October.

I'm now running Mystik 5w40 synthetic in my 6.7 for the time being given Ford's issue, even though I hate the thought of sending $ to Venezuela via Citgo. Mystik 5w40 is still CJ-4, has not been registered CK4, and is on Ford's approved list.

Ok...will have to check bottling dates I guess...even if it says CJ4 on the bottles. Appreciate the insights.

Thanks CLALUJA...will keep Mystic in mind if CK4 issue isn't resolved before my stash is gone. Take care all.

I heard that M1 synthetic TDT 5w40 is staying CJ4 with high P over 1000 ppm, and is not going to CK4. Has anyone else heard or confirmed this? Seems like a good option for Ford diesels at this point, although pricey?

API filings seem to confirm this:

In the U.S., the pricing is better on TDT than it is up here.

Maybe your Walmarts roll it back on occasion. Ours sure don't.

Did not hear that about 5w40 TDT. Might be my go to oil if Delvac is out of reach. Garak, TDT is much cheaper here than Delvac 5w40. Thanks.

Yes, we live in a crazy land up here. I've never seen TDT rolled back with any other M1 product at Walmart, and never rolled back on its own. I don't understand how their isn't an inch of dust on the product, with me never having seen it south of $45 a jug, and that was a few years ago. Yet, I get the Delvac 1 for half that from the distributor. And I know Walmart is getting a better deal than I am. Go figure.

5W40 Mobil TDT is a couple bucks cheaper a gallon at the local Meijer grocery store here in Michigan. Regular pricing for The Mobil TDT is $22.99 vs. Delvac 1 $24.99, Walmart is even higher at $26.99 a gallon for the Mobil TDT.

I still have six gallons in the garage of Delvac 1 from the $12 rebate last May.

Interesting on the Delvac vs TDT...I thought the Delvac CJ4 had better base oil than TDT. Surprised it would be cheaper. Same here Bighorn 2500...I have 9 gallons of Delvac 5w40 from last couple of rebate periods. I guess when I am done with my Delvac stash Ford should have some answers regarding the CK4 issue...guess I shouldn't worry.

The Delvac 1 did, at least until recently, or the new sheet is a disaster. In any event, yes, it's strange up here. All of Imperial Oil's synthetic HDEOs are at fire sale prices all the time, at least at my distributor. Delvac 1 LE 5w30 is actually even cheaper still, which is totally bizarre.

All it really illustrates, though, is that Canadian retailers think that a markup on oil of over 100% is acceptable. There was another thread here about oil markups in the retail industry. Up here, parts stores generally have a 15% to 20% markup on oil. Walmart and Canadian Tire are so bad, if you have to buy oil at a regular price, you're far better off going to an independent parts shop.

How is that even legal putting a product into a container then labeling it something else? That's like putting ruffles in a Dorito bag. Does the word false advertising come to mind?

I looked at the delo 400LE I bought at walmart and it said 11-16 on it I believe, but I heard the delo CJ-4 is going to be around a while yet and the CK-4 bottles are totally different.

You're actually getting a newer spec than advertised, and the API rules are such that new ones are backwards compatible with the old ones. The same thing happened with the SN/GF-5 rollout and SOPUS using SM/GF-4 labels for PCMOs.

In addition to Garak's comment, the CK-4 chemistry will pass all of the CJ-4 tests and as a result could be licensed as CJ-4. For manufacturers who had their CK-4 chemistry ready early (Shell is the obvious example), they have likely been selling their CK-4 formula under a CJ-4 certification for quite some time.

That would be an issue if putting a product in a bottle that was inferior to what the label said. Putting a CK-4 in a jug with CJ-4 labeling is the reverse. CK-4 covers the CJ-4 spec. Since it is backward compatible, putting CK-4 in a CJ-4 labeled jug is quite adequate.

Yes, but can cause a potential problem if you were advised not to use CK4 (Ford) and you think it is CJ4 oil. Isolated set of circumstances...glad I have enough CJ4 to see me through (until Ford figures it out).

To be honest, I think that was one of the reasons that Ford rushed to get the majors listed on their new OEM spec. Because no-one really knows how long it's been since the formula's were actually changed.
