I am a newbie here and been doing alot of searching/reading recently. I have a 99 Civic Coupe EX/Si US/Canada (D16Y8 1.6l SOHC VTEC motor) with 116,000 miles on it. I've used Mobil 1 5w30 winter and/or 10w30 summer since 20,000 miles or so. Right around 100,000 miles, my engine has started to consume more oil. In the past, I would only need to add maybe 0.5 qt every 4000 miles. Now, I use 1.5 qts every 4000 miles depending on how heavy my foot is.
I now notice some light smoke at high rpm (7,200 rev limit). But no smoke whatsoever on cold start, hi-rev off/on gas, etc. This pretty much rules out the valvetrain as the source of oil consumption. It looks more like piston rings to me. No evidence of power/compression loss. Engine looks immaculate inside.
I used to auto-cross the vehicle heavily in the past 3 years, using Mobil 1 10w30 oil. Now, I only autocross maybe 4 times a year. BUT I commute much more than I used to. Putting about 85 miles/day round trip. 9:1 Hwy:City. That's about 30,000 miles/yr!
I like to buy the 5 qt jugs, my motor takes only 3.5 qts, and I use the 1.5 qts to top up over time. I am getting progressively less miles on 5qts. 4000 miles over winter, now only 3000 miles. I will be happy if I can get back to 1.5 qts consumption every 5000 miles. I am using Purolator PureONE filters for the longest time.
I've narrowed down my options based on what is readily available locally:
[1] Rotella 5w40
[2] Mobil 1 Truck and SUV 5w40
[3] Castrol Syntec 5w50
[4] Mobil 1 15w50
I bought a bunch of Mobil 1 15w50 on sale at KMart $4/qt to experiment with this summer. However, I am afraid to starve the engine in any way and add more fuel to the fire. I've been reading about the Mobil 1 Truck and SUV and like it very much on paper. But I would rather save it (or Rotella) for the winter months here in the Michigan area.
I am looking for advice, especially from those with a similar car/engine and driving style. TIA.
