I just bought some of the new extended 15k mobil 1 5w30 and i really don't know how long to leave it in. I'm not interested in going 15k with it but was thinking about 6-8k. I should be safe without doing an analysis right?

What are the factory recommended oil change intervals? Spend some time reviewing used oil anaylsis section and you may get an idea based on resukts . most syn oil may be changed a little too soon.
Most 4 cylinder Hondas have a regular service OCI recommendation of 10k miles and severe service of 5k miles. V6 Hondas are generally 7.5k/3.75k regular/severe. Honda also says that the oil filter only needs to be changed every other time. Hmmm, I find that hard to accept with those thimble sized filters.
Running any synthetic oil you should be able to go the regular OCI interval assuming your car is indeed in regular service and still have plenty of safety margin. Personally I change the filter every time.

Honda Civics are very easy on the oil and will probably show no consumption in 15k miles. I change my inlaws once a year using Amsoil 10w30 the first 2 years at 13k and 10k miles using one filter for the whole change. Usually a Mobil 1 filter. This time I went with 0w30 Amsoil and an Amsoil filter.
There was no apparent use of oil during the yearly intervals but I did not do an analysis. I did check to see if 3.4 qts came out and it did so no oil lost to sludge.
If your civic is a vtec it might behave differently than the DX of my inlaws.

Oh ok thanks, my driving is 90% highway with little or no traffic. So yeah i'm expecting 200k plus with this car hopefully. Not much dust and no off roading.quote:

Oil is cheap insurance. I'd change it out no more than 5,000 miles. Use Mobil 1 5w30, unless it's an SI. The extra dollar more for teh extended drain interval is a waste of money.

I got a Honda Civic new. It now has 7100 miles on the oem filled Honda 5w20. This is made to Honda specifications by EM. When the 10,000 recommended interval is due I will change to Mobil One 0w20. When I can not find the Mobil One 0w20 anymore, I will go to their new 5w20 which also meets Ford and Honda's specifications. I am curious why you would use 5w30 vs the recommended 5w20?

Well i should of added that my car is a 97 honda so it still takes recommends the 5w30 oil. I also should of added that i drive about 90% highway driving. So I guess i'm looking at going 8-10k on this oil based on your guys opinions, with a filter change or no?
oh yeah i have a haynes manual and it says 3k oil changes and maybe sooner if you drive under harsh conditions, not sure if thats right though.
