Alright, I have to say this. Should North Carolina be applauded for ordering this dreck off shelves? Absolutely. Should City Star be driven out of business? You bet.

But doesn't the consumer bear ANY responsibility here? Every owner's manual for every car ever made has a section on oil requirements. If people can't (or won't) RTFM and take the 5 minutes to learn the correct oil (and other simple things) their car needs, then, well...you can lead a horse to water...

I have only limited sympathy for people who buy an expensive, complicated machine then take zero initiative to learn anything whatsoever about it. Most people treat their cars like they are kitchen appliances, that's why so many will condemn a car as a POS when in reality it was their own complete lack of basic care when it malfunctions.

Ick. That is probably the worst oil I have ever seen. I don't understand how companies can get away with selling stuff like that.

Update. My coworker bought that quart at a local gas station when he found his Silverado with 200K was low on oil. He's not a BITOGer, so go easy on him. He knew enough to alert his good buddy (me) to let myself and others know what happened. He read through the PQIA links, and I told him what's what. He is now much wiser with respect to oils. Also, last night he changed the oil and mentioned the oil filter looked really ugly. He got the Silverado for a song, and otherwise takes good care of his vehicles.
 
Man that stuff does look nasty. Its weird that its made from used motor oil but has no additives in it. Or more than .5 tbn. If you compare the add`s left in the UOA`s we do there should be plenty at least more than none. And some of you guys give people heck for putting used oil into another car. I think stuff would actually be worse than leaving your oil in your car indefinately. Very sad, I hate the made in MI stamp on the back. I love buying american made stuff it is almost always of excellant quality But this stuff is a major exception.
 
looks like something that came out of my sewer line once! Went too long on a cesspool pump out.

With a TBN of zero, no calcium, magnesium, phosphorous, zinc, moly, boron, and so forth, I'd say no. As for those who worry about phosphorous and their cats more than their engines, it might be suitable.

lol, I was looking at the average column..... I didn't see the column of 0's to the right...
 
I showed the fluid to another colleague. He too almost tossed his cookies when he saw it. It doesn't smell that good either.

The picture doesn't do the fluid justice. If I could've used some transmitted light, you would see the chunks floating in it. It looks like sawdust was mixed in.
 
Wow that's bad, more so when you consider you can get a quart of a name brand API rated oil for a dollar or two more.

I'd dump whatever is in that engine asap.

One would probably be better off doing a top up from a used oil recycling center than buying this garbage.

Kind of, except think about all the other things we buy, trusting that the general label is correct (5w30, quality mfg. oil). Food, medicine, etc.. We trust that this sort of stuff is regulated for quality. I could imagine a non BITOGER getting suckered into this stuff, kind of.

I have to wonder if these particular bottles were returned from a customer that refilled them. If I see a bottle locally, I will purchase one and inspect it.

Such a shame to taint Dearborn with this company. The well kept brick homes adjacent to this company are very typical of the Dearborn area (world headquarters of Ford).

Seems company have serious problems that need external impetus for resolution. Since you live in Michigan, why not start the process yourself.
 
Well, having worked in mfg, I will appeal to everyone not to jump to conclusions until some sort of inquiry is done. I am not doubting the results, just the assumption the company is unscrupulous because of the belief that this can't happen except by unscrupulous means.

One place I work bought "certified HY100 steel" only to have the material fail on board a Navy ship. Turns out the steel supplier only heat treated (or some such process) only 1/2 of the mill run because the run was interrupted by a labor dispute. (OT:If you want to know why defense articles cost so much is because EVERY thing made from that mill run could be tracked) Needless to say, a lawsuit was born.

The same type of situation occurred years later when we purchased "approved weld wire" for FAA overhaul and repair. It was a shame for the supplier when we sent the wire out to be tested (as a result of the situation mentioned above) and found it to be elementally "Not even close" to what the certs said. When the company was confronted with this fact, they just shrugged.

Point is it isn't a conspiracy when stuff slips thru the cracks. But I'll admit, this does not look good for C.P.
