Chrysler Sebring Transmission Question

I've got a Sebring Convertible with the 2.7 V6 and 4 speed Automatic transmission. Its closing in on 130,000 miles. I know there are horror stories about this engine/transmission combo but this has been a reliable car with no oil sludge. My question here is that when the car is cold, when it shifts into drive it comes with a very abrupt and hard shift. While driving it shifts very smooth into all forward gears and doesn't slip, when the car has warmed up, it seamlessly shifts into drive. The only issue I had was a quick lube did my 120K transmission flush and put Pennzoil universal ATF in my transmission, I drove it for about 700 miles and then noticed when I cleaned the glove box out they didn't put ATF4 in it, I took it back and they quickly put the right fluid in. I have noticed that when I unhook the battery over the winter, the transmission engages into drive smoothly for a while before getting abrupt. Any suggestions?

120K miles is well, well past borrowed time for one of those transmissions. If it dies at 130,000 be satisfied that you got that many miles out of it - the transmission struggled to make 50,000 in many-a-neon and Caravans.

What are the condition of the engine mounts? A friend of mine has a Neon with 105000 miles (on it's second transmission) and it would jerk around when cold - turns out it was a broken transmission mount.

2005 2.7 should be new enough to not have the leaky waterpump and sludge problem.

The motor mounts are good. I had the main gasket replaced in January because of a leak and my mechanic found a couple bad motor mounts at the time and replaced them.

I would drop the pan and change the filter. Bet they didt touch the filter. You can also clean the magnet and inspect the amount of wear metals.

also if they flushed it, I would be concerned they reverse flushed it.

Are you sure they actually changed it again or just blew you off and told you they did? I never trust half the independant shops near me, most are idiots running them and if they were stupid enough to put a universal incorrect fluid in, one has to wonder how many customers transmissions they have ruined with the wrong fluid that doesnt meet spec.

I have a 40TE and it has been flawless, shifts great. I have changed the fluid a couple times with Redline C+ and also put a
dorman pan on with drain plug.

Supposedly, most of the issues with the 41TE were bandaged up by 2005, as was the water pump and PCV issues of the 2.7.

If you Google 41TE Relearn Procedure, you will find out that there is some controversy about whether the battery disconnect method is always reliable to reset the transmission computer to its default settings. There are some questionable DIY methods. Others claim you need the correct scan tool to overcome some obstacles by the battery/DIY methods.

So, maybe its just a transmission relearn procedure challenge that you need to tackle.

Best of luck to you.

They didn't replace the filter or drop the pan. They hooked it up to the machine to remove the old fluid and install the new. In retrospect I probably should have left it alone. I know 100% they put ATF +4 in it when I brought it back, I stood there and watched them flush ATF4 through the system and add the proper amount back in. They had to have one of the auto parts stores deliver the ATF4 to them.

I hope that when you had them put in the ATF+4 there was a full system fluid exchange. There are too many stories of a little of the wrong fluid causing issues in Chrysler transmissions.

The water pump is still inside the engine,if the seals ever go,kiss the engine goodbye.

And when I worked at different shop, I did countless services with Kendall VersaTrans and several transmission replacements where the rebuild company supplied Peak Multi Vehicle formula. All work fine.

Since you say the shifting smooths out after the battery is unhooked I'd take a look into the TCM programming. If it's never been done, there is probably some kind of shift quality update out there.
