Chrysler 45RFE fluid change interval

Very common transmission found in Jeeps, Dodges, Rams, Chryslers. For all of those with these cars, when are you guys changing your tranny fluid and how much of it does it usually take?

My 1996 Ram took 5 quarts of ATF+4 for a pan drop and fluid/filter change. I don't think it is the same transmission as yours but is likely similar.
 
I do a auto transmission drain and fill (plus LubeGard Red) in all my vehicles each spring before the summer heat arrives.

It's inexpensive insurance and performed at the same time as a simple LOF change. Most vehicles use 3 - 4 quarts of Valvoline Low Viscosity ATF (full synthetic) for only $16.97 per gallon at Walmart.
 
Side note - when changing the filters, be sure to change the sealing ring that holds the pan filter in. RFEs are infamous for dropping the filter out if you dont.

I believe a pan drop and filter change (both filters) will use 5.5-6.5 quarts depending on whether it is a 2WD vs. 4WD. If memory serves, the severe service interval on these was listed as 50 or 60K miles. The 45RFE/545RFE are very good transmissions.

I have the 545RFE in my Dodge truck. Gets changed every 30k miles. Some people say that you should never change it. Those people either A) sell transmissions for a living or B) have never owned a chrysler transmission!

Good luck with your fluid change, I used BG ATF+4 for the first couple changes, the last one was Valvoline I believe. The next one coming up will be Royal Purple.
 
I have the 42re in my Jeep. Its the 45rfe's weaker cousin. (As said, a pan drop should be somewhere between 5.5 and 6.5 quarts. Per wjjeeps.com it depends on if you have the 4x4 model or not.)

My Jeep had a pan drop/ filter change around 100k then again at 45k and 55k. I am now planning on doing pan drop/ filter changes every other year and just siphon the 4ish quarts though the fill tube in between. The ATF is bright red now. I am still undecided on whether or not I should install a remote filter.

Use ATF+4 only.
