Christmas topics

Have seen a number of topics flagged for religion. I have not quarantined or adjusted any.

My thought process:

-Christmas is a federal holiday, so despite religious significance for some, it is no different than celebrating the fourth of July in the eyes of the practical holiday itself.

-If Christmas is not posted in a religious context (despite the actual nature of the holiday), then it is non-religious, despite the discussion of gifts, etc. (and the symbolism of why we actually give gifts).

-To capitalize "CHRIST" either separate or in the word Christmas is showing respect to the Diety, which, though then religious in nature, is simply a mark of respect. Let's say that we had a non-religious discussion which included some other God or Diety, Id say it is fair game to capitalize to show respect.

-To have a thread pertaining to the day and holiday, even if done in showing respect in spelling and writing of the name of the holiday, is OK, so long as conversation olny reflects the activities of today's holiday and not writing to a religious basis for the posts.

I hope this makes sense, and if folks have issues or comments, please flag them by sending an email. I recognize that today's holiday has significant relevance to some (myself included), and may or may not to others. Let's please ensure that the posts though do not verge to Religious, so they may remain.

but the words B-u-d-d-h-a and A-l-l-a-h are both CENSORED on this board, even in lower case LOL - how the heck can you show respect to them and capitalize, when you can't even mention those? I thought all were welcome here. If you censor those because it's a "religious topic"/"term", then you should censor the names of ALL religious leaders/gods, etc . FAIR?

(i don't belong to any of the above 2 religions, they're just an example)

here's what I mean: I tried to type them just like I'd type the word "Christ" (which is obviously allowed)

the leader of Buddhism is [censored]
leader of Islam is [censored]

I hope this will be explained soon

Agreed. If you're going to go as far as to censor the names of other deities, people who capitalize Christ should be banned.

If you're going to allow the capitalization of Christ -- something that I can't imagine is anything other than a way to wave something religious in people's faces -- then ALL religious opinions should be permitted to be expressed (if not discussed per se).

I'm sorry but I had to post again. I have no religious affiliation whatsoever but the more I think about this, the more puzzled I am and the angrier I get. You can't CENSOR the name of other deities in the name of running an RSP-free forum, and then allow people to wave Christianity in our faces.

I fully agree that it's okay to mention a deity as a sign of respect, and that that is a very different thing from actually discussing it per se. The objection I have is to the apparent discrimination.

Pick one. Un-censor the other names or give the passive-aggressive Christians the same treatment as everyone else.

First ask yourself if you've ever said "life is unfair" ..or something along the lines of "we're drowning in fairness".

If so, then you fully realize the reason why we're drowning. It's now a vastly bigger topic than it was. Now we'll have the mushrooming reactions.

I seriously doubt the moderators or Helen are purposely trying to demean religions other then Christianity or promote Christianity because of the way the board censors things.

Even though I'm not a devout Christian, the thing that puzzles me and makes me angry is that Christians can no longer celebrate Christmas as a religious holiday without getting dumped on by people who aren't Christians!

who did anything to disrupt celebrating Christmas in any way??

I am not saying Helen or mods are PROMOTING Christianity - I am just pointing out OTHER religious terms/names are CENSORED - NOT the same thing !!

and what is the "way" the board censors things? censor anything else other than Christianity based terms ??? SOMEONE had to determine which words get censored - they're not chosen to be censored AUTOMATICALLY !!!

PLEASE don't take this OT: let;s stay on course; discuss that somewhere else - we're discussing why OTHER religions/their leader names/terms are CENSORED here but not Christianity.

I just saw this post- is that your EXPLANATION or what? or was that a joke?

I thought SOMEONE had to pick/determine which words get censored - they're not chosen to be censored randomly !

I meant here on the board/on this thread, and I think you knew that very well. - don't turn this into a discussion about the ACLU, etc.

I want to keep this thread totally on topic to see what JHRZ comes up with as a solution/explanation to my original question about his original title/post

The board has a built in censor, the mods don't control it (AFAIK).

I KNOW! what I mean is: a HUMAN determines what words get automatically censored by the built-in-sensor !!! it's not a robot that determines WHAT gets censored!

Please don't get this started into an rsp post, else I'll need to close it. I'll just say two things:

-point on censoring other words is duly noted - perhaps we can work that as a new year's effort.

-I posted my logic for not closing a bunch of posts that mentioned Christmas, in response to members reporting them with the question of if they were religious. The points made are noted, and it is my sincere hope that they will be balanced out when everyone returns.
