Choosing between two 2 stroke oils for 1986 GT150 Johnson outboard engine

I have been reading about 2 stroke oil until my brain quit working. I have a 1986 GT150 Johnson outboard engine. I am trying to make it last as long as possible. Would the Quicksilver help me compared to the Pennzoil for $12 a gallon more?

I honestly don't think it's worth the $12 extra, the pennzoil stuff is great. If you wanna make it last longer do 32:1 instead. A member on here knows a lot about 2 cycle testing and racing said that 32:1 protects better and going beyond that doesn't really protect more but can make more power up until I think he said 8:1
 
I have used the Pennzoil in my Toro snowblower that calls for TCW3 oil and I have heard that the Pennzoil XLF is well liked by those with 2 stroke outboards.
 
Hard to say if Quicksilver is better than Pennzoil. Amsoil makes some really good 2 stroke oils.

Is GT a special hi performance version of that outboard?
I read on Marine Engines that it is but the mechanic I bought it from says it is a crossflow. The high performance is a looper if I remember correctly. I might have that backwards.

Amsoil is probably more than Quicksilver. The mechanic adamantly told me to ONLY run Quicksilver products but after years of luking around BobistheOilGuy I learned much of preference is marketing.
 
Pennzoil Premium Plus synthetic blend TCW3 is superb oil. Don't hesitate to use it. Also it is available at WalMart for a great price, about $23 per gal. HomeDepot has it on sale locally for $21/gal.

I did two stroke oil testing way back when, the difference between quality brands is near nil. The difference in engine lifespan with too little oil is significant, if you premix, use 50 to 1. The Pennzoil products have always been excellent in two strokes. And the more modern Premium Plus is no exception.
 
The guys over at www.thehulltruth.com would say the Pennzoil smokes way less than Yamalube. I would think that Quicksilver while maybe more expensive is very good. I use their syn blend 25/50 in my old inboard and get excellent oil analysis results with it, the oil stays in grade and has just enough zinc for older engines (1300 ppm). Expensive but it's only once a year oil change.
 
Any modern full synth. oil is light years ahead of 1986 oils when that motor was built. Use any modern full synth. outboard oil at 40:1 with confidence.
Back in '86 there where only a few boutique synth. oils then, I used Bel Ray in a race built 2 stroke 440cc sled back then. All the factory conventional oils made the rings stick in it. Synth oils cured the issue.

Had good results with the Pennzoil on my 2000 Johnson 150.
Seemed to smoke a bit less at startup and idling.
Can't beat availability or cost.
 
I have been running penzoil from Walmart in my 2004 yamaha forever.
No oil related problems
 
It's lived this long on whatever they had between then and now, it'll live a long time on any of the good TCW-3 oils available as long as the oil pump doesn't quit or she goes lean and burns down a cylinder. A leaky case gasket or seal or dirty carb will kill that motor long before your choice of oil does.

I have a 1984 Corson that was my first new boat. I bought it new after getting out of the navy (SEAL Team 10) with the original 60 HP "big twin" and have been using Penzoil semi-synthetic TCW-3 oil in the blue bottle for longer than I can recall, and she still runs like new. Compression is 127/125, and run it at 40:1. I also run it in my Merc 135 "Tower of Power" on my Hydrostream and tach it to 6200 all the time with the same results. Excellent oil. I buy it at Walmart. I also use Sta-Bil Marine 360 in every tank.

Quicksilver Premium Plus. Get it at Academy. 50:1. Too much oil might gum the carbs. .02
 
40:1 has never gummed up mine. However, Sta-bil Marine 360 has a lot of anti-corrosion and cleaning agents in it, plus keeps the gas fresh for a couple of years.
