First of all let me start by saying that I'm making this post to fulfill a requirement for a class project. In addition to a research paper, we have to perform an action that could help create change for the topic that we chose.

My topic is on China's persecution of the spiritual group Falun Gong ( link to Wikipedia ). My course of action is to create awareness, because this issue doesn't seem to be discussed very frequently compared to other human rights issues such as Tibet, Darfur, and the Tutsi genocide in Rwanda. I was not aware of China's persecution of Falun Gong until 2006 when I was in Madison, WI for my first year of college. I was walking around the farmer's market and a Chinese lady came up to me and handed me a pamphlet about the issue and asked me to sign a petition to help the people affected by the conflict.

China doesn't seem to get punished by the international community even though they've done so many ugly things that violates people's human rights. In my topic for example, members of the spiritual group are imprisoned and tortured just because they belong to the group. From my research, the problem that the Chinese government has with this group is the large number of members that it has. The communists fear being overthrown. Estimates range from 80-100 million. I don't necessarily agree with what this group believes in, but they should not be tortured . What else doesn't make sense is that China is part of the UN and they are violating basic guidelines for human rights. The UN and world powers obviously haven't taken appropriate action to rectify China's wrong doings, as we can see with the current events. These people being persecuted have not committed any heinous crimes for the most part. The best excuse that the Chinese government could come up for cracking down on them is because they deem the group an "evil cult".

The point of this post though is not just to bring awareness to this issue but to hopefully catch a few people's attention and those few people might take some action, such as writing to their congressmen regarding the issue and asking them to do something about it.

Also, this site seems to have many people who pretty much boycott Chinese made goods. Besides having lousy quality, there is another reason to boycott them. As part of their punishment plan, some members of Falun Gong are forced into labor camps. There was an account from one of these prisoners who said he was forced to work in sweatshops. One of the items that he made were Homer Simpson slippers. The ones that he are talking about resemble the ones that I've seen at Walmart before.

Thank you for reading this post. I know it's long. I hope you would leave some feedback on this issue and since I am writing this so late I'm not thinking quite clearly so I might make a another post to add a few things.

Well, I imagine in the realm of international diplomacy and whatnot, one has to ask, "what good comes from the punishing"?

I can't say that it's the best technique for stopping these irregularities and violations of basic human rights, but continued development does give those in power, and more importantly, the people that they govern ..something to lose.

We had a sizable protest from the shareholders of Exxon (pre-XOM) with the dealings in Chile. They wanted to cease operations there. The last thing you want to have occur in an environment that is harsh on its people is to further strangle the resources that there are to distribute.

Most "unrest" is due to lack of resources. If you're in the driver seat, you've got to manage the population. Even if you're a brutal dictatorship, the chaos that emerges in your vacuum can be even more harsh and brutal. "Punishment" merely sends the anxiety or hardship downhill. The leadership is even more concerned about the formation of a group that can challenge them and disrupt order.

There is no way to "apologize" out of oppression. Just research the Watts riots. You put X number of generations in a box, you can't just let them out to live free ..at least without side effects of unfavorable impact.

It's not easy riding ramrod on a herd of 1B people.

Going on 1.4 billion people, actually.

I refrained from partaking in the Olympic torture run brouhaha here in SF yesterday.

With the authorities changing the route a few times, catching a glimpse of the torch would have required me to be wilier than a coyote with ESP. Also, I don't think it's a secret that I don't care for getting stuck among the masses.

Funny, when the Sydney Olympic torch came through town down the highway (5km away), I celebrated by sleeping through it.

Wack job groups have a tough time no matter where they are at. IIRC, the Branch Davidians got a little bit toasty after the Feds got impatient with them. I wouldn't want my organs harvested, but being burned to a crisp doesn't seem like a big improvement, either.

It you're going to belong to a wack job religious group, you are being pretty unrealistic to expect anything but tough times no matter where you are at.

Even if you're in a place where you don't end a phrase with a preposition?

I'm sure that those in charge are like those in charge everywhere. First thing they do is assure that they remain in charge.

This is why we're developing them at a pall mall pace. They're losing it. Pacification through commerce.

I think that this is a regional strategic defensive maneuver.

I'm just glad he didn't spell "wack" incorrectly.

They would probably get more press if they were the other type.

China should never have been awarded the Olympics. Besides it's human rights violations, it's probably not a safe environment for athletes or spectators.

But then, where is safe anymore?

What he said. All you wacky religious groups, get used to repression by your respective governments.

Now my own particular religions affiliation, that is a different thing altogether. You see, it is true, and I can prove it. The Flying Spaghetti Monster is real, but everything else is just a product of man's imagination or desperation. So everything else deserves a heavy hand from the government. See here for the lowdown on "Pasta-farianism".

Reach out to his noodly appendages, folks. You'll be glad you did.
