My girlfriend test drove a Chevy Equinox yesterday. It has a 185-hp 3400 3.4L V6 engine. The window sticker shows the engine is made in China. Does anyone know who makes this engine? Is it made by GM in China or is it made by a Chinese company?

the engine is a good engine. It is derived from the 60 Degree engine family of GM. As far as being made in china, I do not know anything about. The Equinox sits on a good platform. It handles great in rain and snow and on dry pavement. Good luck with your choice.

It is made in a GM factory in China and imported to the US. To my knowledge, it's the same 3400 V6 that is used in other models, like the minivans. I've read several news articles about auto makers trying to tap into the Chinese market. With the recent efforts of the Chinese govt to establish a capitalistic economy, there's a huge sales potential there. This engine factory is one of GM's first steps in trying to tap into that economy. At least that's the way it's been played off in the news.

Thanks for the info guys. Too bad GM doesn't put the Honda engine in the Equinox. I'm not all that high on Saturn. I'll check it out anyway. This is only going to be a 3 year lease so it's going to be GM's problem if it breaks down. It will be under warranty during the lease period.

Chinese do in fact make extremely high quality items, its just we as a nation have a lust for cheap prices (ie Walmart) and receive the low quality items. In my opinion engineering design has a lot more to do with reliability over who makes it.

I agree. On all the recent quality surveys, GM has been the top rated domestic manufacturer and has brands (Cadillac and Buick) with quality equal to or better than many of their Asian and especially European competitors. IIRC, Cadillac was second only to Lexus on the most recent survey I saw.

I agree too with the GM being good quality. The only problem I had with my 2002 Cavalier was the brake rotors warping. Less than 50 bucks at the parts store for new pads and rotors. Probably not a bad idea to change the rotors whan you do a brake job anyway if they are cheap.

Just to add my .02...

I will never buy another GM product with that engine in it. Do a search for 3.4l intake gasket leak. It is a very common problem that may be fixed by now, but why take the chance. Basically, you either have had or will have to have that gasket replaced on that and other similiar engines.

FWIW, this problem HAS been fixed.

Heck, almost every LT1, including mine, has had an intake leak(right by the EGR valve) at some point. Not going to scare me off from my Impala. Now blown head gasket like Ford's 3800, that's scary.

That's news to me. When did they fix it? Just on the Equinox, or across the whole line? I knew the 3800 Series III has been fixed, but hadn't heard about the 3400.
