Chevy Cruze oil filter question.

Hello, was doing the first oil change on my Chevy Cruze 1.4T. I had purchased a Napa Gold replacement filter. Upon removing the old one, I noticed the Napa filter was missing the felt gasket on the bottom.

The online pictures of the Napa Filter showed a gasket was suppose to be there. With the store now closed, I went to another auto parts store. None of their other brands had a felt gasket. Finally found a STP at Autozone that had the felt gasket. Of course this filter is only a 3000 mile filter.

Why would all the manufacturers be leaving this felt gasket off? I'd assume oil and particals can leak right by filter.

Some use a rubber and some use felt. They will both work fine. Also I have not seen any real reason to buy a high priced filter for inserts. I have bought just about every brand for the GM 3.6 motor and even the lower quality ones are fine.

If you plan to keep the car order a bunch from rockauto. They have a lot of them for less than $2, many with the felt if that's your preference. Stock up now.

There is no rubber or any other material in place of the felt. In the picture that doesn't have the felt, is all hard plastic. What appears to be a gasket is just the shape of filter.

Maybe the cost of putting unneeded felt at the bottom of the filter was not worth it. NAPA decided the shape of the plastic end-cap works well and many other brands and manufacturers do the same thing.

Where do you get this 3,000 miles limit on this filter? All filters [from reputable makers] are warrantied to perform to OEM specs. The STP filter will be just fine.

Seems like the Delco/OEM is Hengst and is ~5.00. Thats what I would do most likely.

Wrong. Some filters have better filtering media than others. Fram Ultra is hard to beat. Other ones "look" OK to the naked eye, yet filters are supposed to... well... FILTER. Resist clogging, filter out smaller particles. There are differences in performance.

And no felt gasket is needed. The NAPA gold oil filters are decent enough. Better than some others anyway. Fram Ultra is better.

And the only place that will really show up is in some lab. Out in the real world cars have 100k+ with these inferior filters.

Myh top filter choices for your Cruze:
OEM Hengst E611H
Mahle OX401D
Mann HU 612/2x (NOT the ML1053)

Wix probably used to rebox the OE filter, but later decided to make their own. The first US-market car to use this application was the 2008 Astra, which isn't too common and not worth making their own filter for, but is popular in Europe, hence the initial reboxing.

But once the Cruze and Sonic came out, US demand for these filters shot up dramatically, which made it worth it for Wix to make their own.

Wix makes quality filters, so it'd be a fourth choice after the other three I mentioned earlier.

The felt gasket probably doesn't matter.

I've done many a removable cartridge filter and never seen a felt gasket. Wix makes good stuff. Just make sure the Wix filter is the same height and diameter as the OEM filter.

The felt is completely unnecessary it is nice though the cartridge should seal just fine without it I wouldn't worry about it

Just use the Ac Delco PF2257G made by hengst it's a top notch filter and the oem filter + my sonic 1.8 calls for it as well as the sonic and cruze engines are the same 1.8 na and 1.4t. Fram ultra is coming out with a filter for the sonic and cruze engines in january fyi.

FWIW I have used both types of filters in the Cruze I maintain. The felt doesn't seem to make a difference.
