Chevy Colorado, am I missing something?

I have a 17. I really like mine. Drives great and the seats are comfortable. I recently drove a customers Tacoma. I had to back it out and drive it to the back of the shop because he couldn’t back it out with the trailer he had on it. I thought it was okay but the cab felt cramped compared to my Colorado. Not sure what year it was but it looked pretty new.

The Colorado is much like other American trucks. The model and options you choose determine the level of satisfaction you get.

The base model will not be the vehicle you remember loving, 30 years from now. However, the higher end packages are stunningly good.

Say what you want about Tacoma and 4Runners. That drive train will last 20+ years/300,000 miles without skipping a beat. Everyone knows it. The other stuff is fluff. Toyota is all about reducing risk in exposure to failing systems. Reliability. Thus, their technology is ancient.... because it is tried and true.
Yeah that's what Toyota seems to do - sit back and wait for proven technology.

As an owner of a 2022 Nissan Frontier crew cab, short wheel base 4x4, I would not overlook this vehicle if you are shopping "small" trucks. Bed height is perfect. It rides like a truck (stiff and jarring), but drives and handles excellent.
Man I would have to go for the Pro (4x?) with the muti led reflector front headlamps. Everyone is raving online about how bright they are, well everyone that is behind the wheel that is. ;)

Even the basic halogen reflector style headlamps on my 2022 Frontier S-model are excellent. So much better than the halogen reflectors that were on my 2017 and 2019 Ram 1500s.

The ones (Halogens) on the previous generation low to mid models F150s are absolute garbage. I read starting in 2024 all trims get LEDs.

I always thought the mid sized trucks should be another 8"-10" longer. It would be easy to do and add so much utility.
With Taco and Frontier at least you can get a 6 foot bed standard with access cab, or you can get 6 foot bed optionally with a few trim levels and 4 real door crew cabs. However at that point the truck is getting pretty long and turn radius pretty wide.

Aren't the full size trucks with 4 doors standard box is 5.5 feet, and "long box" is 6.5, which honestly isn't a huge amount more. Friend of mine has the 4 door / 6.5 - and parking anywhere in the city is an event.

I love the new Colorado, my problem is a nicely equipped one is basically full size truck territory. You would think the smaller pickup would stand out as a bargain compared to the full size. I know trim and options have a lot to do with it too.
There isn't that much more material that goes into the larger truck. Add in economies of scale (don't the larger trucks sell more) and that there is about the same number of bits to assemble, meaning labor is likely a wash and it's easy to see why smaller trucks don't carry smaller price tags.

They used to be a lot less. Supply and demand presumably. I couldn't park anything other than a single cab / 6.5 foot box full size in my garage or in the city, but my Frontier fits nicely.

Since everyone making them also sells full size - I wonder if they fear them eating into full size sales if they were too cheap?

Of course a Camry is $30K now.

Yeah it just seems now the only real benefit to the smaller truck is you want a smaller truck. I could get by fine with the smaller truck here. My problem is, if getting a full size is about the same cost I’ll naturally go full size, more room for the kids. I’ve contemplated a gladiator though, mainly because we could ride to the beach with no top and still have utility. In Florida weather I can pretty much have the top off most of the year minus these rain storms.

My standard cab long box 1985 F150 was actually smaller than my 2011 Frontier CC short box - LxWxH.

The current generation of full size trucks are super sized comparative to the past.
