found some 5 quart jugs of chevron supreme at my local advance auto. meets sm specs. can someone inform me on the different ratings of oil? is sm the old standard and sn the new one? is it ok to use this sm rated oil in my car? not running full synthetic anymore, either motorcraft syn blend 5W30 or chevron supreme.

SM is fine for your 2002 Altima.
SN is the newest standard but it's only been out a few months and there's still plenty of SM on the store shelves (even at Walmart which sells plenty of oil).

Chevron Supreme is good oil, and SM meets specs of pretty much every car built in the last 15-20 years that specs plain jane API oil specifications.

whats the better oil out of chevron supreme and MC syn blend in terms of protection, viscosity shearing, etc? summers get fairly hot in south lousiana and im thinking of going to a 10W30 but some on here say that the 5W30 will be fine.

Moto, you're a good Chevron Supreme cheerleader. I had/used Chevron Supreme SM/GF-4 when I bought it for 49 cents after rebate, it was and is a good conventional oil specially for its reasonable price.
