Chevron or Penzoil ATF?

Hi. I have a 1991 Toyota previa. After reading this forum, I somewhat regret having done a transmission flush at one of those shops when it had about 90k miles. The van now has 116,500 miles. The transmission seems fine, no ill effects from the flush.

I do however want to replace the fluid in there and possibly the filter too again, because I don't quite trust the place that did it at 90k (Brake Masters).

As the toyota previa calls for Dexron II, which would be a better choice to put in for a drain and refill? (I may think about doing a cooler line flush) Do I have to get the high friction additive from (LC?) to make a dexron III in to a dexron II? Is it ok to put dexron III into the dexron II toyota transmission?

Which is the better ATF between chevron and Pennzoil? I'm not really looking into a synthtic right now.

Hi Chris,

First of all: If your transmission calls for Dexron II you MUST NOT add anything (especially friction modifiers) if you use Dexron III. Dexron III should provide much better shifting and protection compared to Dexron II.

People here like Pennzoil, and I'm sure there is nothing wrong with it, but I personally would go with Chevron or Castrol (from Wal-Mart if you want to some some $). I don't know, though, how much Pennzoil ATF costs.

penz is 2.08 chevron is 1.50...

At my local walmart, they have supertech DexronIII for about $1.20, then they have the multi-vehicle version of that and they have Pennzoil which is about $2.08 as stated (I didn't happen to write the prices down). My local costco sells the big 'ol 12 packs of Chevron DexIII/Merc, I can't remember the price at this moment.

I would venture to say that for a non-synthetic DexIII atf, Chevron, Penz, supertech and others are about the same? Though there is a slight difference in price. However, I have seen synthetic labled as DexII, but have not seen regular atf labled as DexII(except for "multi-vehicle formulas").

On a side note, whats the combo that I can use for hondas? DexIII and the additive is called?

-and, is fram ok to use for the transmission filter? Or should I just go otherbrand/oem? I know that fram's oil filters aren't great by any means...
