I have a co-worker that has a 2000 Chevy truck (full size). I asked him what type of oil he used in it, and he responded "Mobil 1 5w30". I asked what his OCI was, he said 5000 miles or once a year. He drives the vehicle about 5 total miles one-way to work, and back. He mentioned his oil change light comes on about half way through his interval, Then he resets it (said something like turn on Ign, pump accelerator 3X then turn Ign off). he then changes the oil when the light comes on again, which is about 5000 miles.

I was under the impression that, in addition to miles, it would come on when the additives were depleted, or 'wear' particles reached a certain point. Why would he be able to reset this light, and it take so long to come back? I mean, if it came on once, would it not come on real soon again?
 
No, it is time based. It takes in to consideration many variables, such as trip length and temperature, as well as elapsed time. It does not actually analyse the oil. From what I have read it works well. For example, my wifes 2.2 Litre EcoTech powered Chevy Malibu comes on after about 8000 miles with her driving habits, and my Duramax diesel comes on after about 10,000 miles.
 
Some of these lights are set to come on from how much fuel has been used and not miles or wear particles etc.(along with the other variable mentioned above) This one comes on in about 2500 miles or about 6 months. It really seems to be going by fuel used etc etc, which is why it doesn't come back on until about another 2500 miles or 6 months when reset.
 
I will note that your friend has the second shortest oil change indication we've ever seen in a GM product on this board.
I think *ONE* person reported a 2,000 mile reccomended change interval for a soccer mom's Chevy Venture minivan.
When my system in my '96 Caprice Classic went off, it was between 6500 and 7500 miles.

I'll go a step further and tell you his method is very wrong indeed!

He's probably thinking that "all those extra additives" in his Mobil 1 and the "change interval written on the bottle" know more than the GM OLM. This is completely incorrect. We here all know, or should by now at least, that the biggest advantage to using a fully synthetic motor oil is to protect the engine in extreme high temp or high stress operation. The extended oil change intervals advertised by many are not such a good idea, and are really not backed up by the makers of those oils. Otherwise we here wouldn't be such big advocates of the old 3000 mile change.

The GM OLM light is calibrated for ordinary conventional oil. In the past, when I was a high (20,000 miles per year) mileage driver, I always used M1 with yearly oil change intervals on several different cars in the 70's, 80's, and 90's. Never had any problems, and my engines always stayed nice and quiet up to 140,000 miles. I have been retired several years now, and only drive 6 0r 7,000 miles a year. So as not to waste synthetic, I have gone back to conventional, changed twice a year.

Synthetic is for long OCI's, turbocharged engines, or sludge monsters. If you are going to change oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles,or every 6 months, conventional will make your engine last just as long as synthetic.
 
Just to stir things up, GM has a little info about the OLM on their website. They posted some POSSIBLE service intervals for the following driving conditions for OLM equipped vehicles.

Frequent, Short Trips: 3-4000 mi./1-yr
Urban, City Driving: 4-6000 mi./1-yr
Towing: 5-7000 mi./1-yr
FWY Driving: 7-12000mi./1-yr

Combination of City/HWY: 5-6000mi./1-yr

Gallons used is a good method for setting an oci. If something happens to drop mileage, it might also shorten the life of the oil. Using mileage, alone can't handle as many situations as well as gas consumption, it's just that gallons used takes more effort to track.

Only to the extent that the car came with conventional oil, if it came with synthetic, it calibrated for synthetic.

Lubrication engineers perform a number of tests to answer these kinds of questions. Vehicles are operated under prescribed conditions, and periodically a sample of the oil is taken into the laboratory for analysis. When the condition of the oil is no longer satisfactory, the mileage is noted. Here’s information on how an oil life monitor works.
Additives
Straight oil is not an ideal lubricant in an engine. A package of additives is needed to give the oil properties it does not naturally have or to enhance its natural properties. Some of the tasks accomplished by additives:
- viscosity modifiers, to keep the oil the proper thickness over a wide range of operating temperatures
- anti-oxidant, to keep the oil from thickening
- corrosion inhibitors, to protect engine components
- anti-wear
- anti-foam
- detergents, to suspend solid particles.
What Makes Oil "Wear Out?"
If you were to start out with a crankcase full of fresh, clean oil, and drove the vehicle for a period of time, eventually the oil would have to be changed. During this time, what can change fresh oil into "worn out" oil?
First, dilution. When gasoline is burned in the combustion chamber, the by-products include a lot of water. Some of this water can find its way into the crankcase through piston ring blow-by. If the engine is cold, and if combustion is not perfectly complete, a small amount of acid is formed. It, too, can blow-by into the oil. You don’t need to be a top-notch scientist to realize that water and acid aren’t good things to pump through the lubrication system of the engine. If an engine is run long enough for the engine oil to warm, the water
and acids will evaporate and not accumulate. But, during very short trips in cold weather, water and acids can enter the engine oil and cause the oil to "wear out." Second, the degradation of the oil and its additives. We mentioned earlier that a number of additives are put into oil to improve its performance. If these additives are degraded or decomposed, the oil is no longer capable of doing all of its jobs properly. Oil with
degraded additives can become thick and dark. Additives become degraded by exposure to extreme heat. There are two places a lot of heat can reach the oil. One is near the combustion chamber. Oil at the top piston ring is exposed to very high temperature. And some bearing surfaces can also put a lot of heat into the oil at high operating temperatures. So, degradation of additives from high temperature operation is the second factor that can cause oil to "wear out."
How Can Operating Conditions be Used to Predict Oil Life?
Using carefully controlled laboratory tests, it’s possible for lubrication engineers to measure how long it takes to dilute engine oil during cold operation. And it’s possible to measure how long it takes for high temperature
to degrade the additives. We usually think of measuring time in hours and minutes, but for an engine, the
amount of revolutions it has run is also a good measure. So for the purposes of oil life, time is measured in engine revolutions. Engineers like to talk in terms of models. A model is a way to describe something
mathematically. It’s possible to create an oil life model that very carefully matches the results of analyzing the oil in a laboratory. The oil life monitor, then, is based on a model. A computer chip in the Powertrain
Control Module is loaded with a certain number of engine revolution counts. The count for each engine/vehicle combination is determined by testing. As the engine runs, each revolution is subtracted from the remaining count in the oil life monitor. When the count reaches zero, the instrument panel light comes on. But, here’s the clever part. When the various input sensors detect that the engine is running under either cold or hot conditions, it subtracts extra counts (penalties) for each engine revolution. So, the conditions
that cause the oil to "wear out" make the counter run down faster. When the oil is changed, it’s necessary to
reset the oil life monitor (see the February and March 2000 issues of TechLink) and the countdown begins again.

NOTE: Synthetic oil resists "wearing out" better than mineral oil, so the oil life monitor
is set to account for this, but only on vehicles that are specified for synthetic oil from the
factory -- the Corvette, for instance. Using synthetic oil in other vehicles is certainly not
harmful, but the oil life monitor will continue to count down as though the engine contained
mineral oil.

The OLM is penalizing for all those short trips. It knows the oil is never getting up to operating temperature to burn off fuel dilution and contamination.

I'm not sure his method is the best approach.
 
If you go into www.GM.com and get to the "Environmenal" area, there is the original press release and related information on the current GM OLM System. There is a graph of the whole spectrum of uses also, which might be a better explanation of things than just talking about it.

As stated, it is calibrated for normal oil, but the previous GM Engineer comments of several months ago mentioned the reason for M1 being standard had more to do with engine oil temps during racing activities (and possible downsizing and deletion of engine oil coolers) as the main reasons that, for example, the HF3.6L DOHC VVT V-6 in a CTS has "Mobil 1" on the oil filler cap and the same engine in a Rendezvous might not. Different vehicles and uses with the same basic engine design (yes, I know that one is fwd and the other is rwd).

It should also be mentioned that before the current Trailblazer/Envoy vehicles were introduced with the current GM OLM system, the prior systems were all "mileage based" rather than the current "use based". After the Trailblazer/Envoy OLM was introduced, it was spread to other GM vehicles.

In any event, having the light come on (by whatever system) is a good reminder.

As the GM Engineer stated, much research and testing was done to get the system refined and validated--for whatever oil is spec'd for the vehicle. Vehicle manufacturers have said, from the start, that oil change intervals are not to be extended just because syn oil is used rather than dino--be that as it may.

In some cases, the GM OLM might really be an eye-opener for some drivers.

Are you certain of this? I notice that you do not state which year Trailblazer/Envoy that you are referring to, but it is my impression that the Envoy has only been around for a year or two. I'm no SUV fanatic, so that could be incorrect as well.
My point is all GMOLM's were "use based", none to my knowledge were ever mileage based. My 1999 Silverado is use based, my '99 STS is use based, and I know that Cadillacs even earlier than that were use based. I think the first models to even have an OLM's were Caddys, they usually get the good stuff first.
Some of the foreign cars had simple mileage counters, I think BMW was one.
 
The envoy came out same time as blazer, same vehicle different looks.

I have an '05 CTS 3.6 and it came with Mobil 1 and has the cap. My brothers wife has 2005 Buick Lacrosse CLX with same engine, no Mobil 1. But my engine and his only share the basic engine, his is transverse mounted, less HP, different oil filter design (spin-on) and differnt induction system. Both cars has dual exhaust.

While engine oil heat etc may have something to do with it, Cadillac eludes to less maintanence with the synthetic, that was pitched to me when I bought the car and went thru owner benefits tour. For instance, my 05 CTS just tuned 6,000 miles (4 months) and the OLM is at 49%. So assuming I continue to drive the same, I am looking at about 12,000 between OC. A big cost savings for owners.

My dad's Equinox has the system too, I read up on it in his owner's manual when he asked me for advice on changing the oil. It's pretty ****ed nifty. Since his miles are 90% interstate, his OCIs will probably be pretty long even though it is calibrated for dino.
 
On my silverado I dont have the percentage indicator but I am currenty at 6,300 miles. That means that its going to be at least a 7,000 mile OCI on dino.
