My son bought this car 5 months ago and up to now the car has only been driven 2500 miles. I don't know but if it was mine I would go ahead and change the oil. specially because is going to be the very first oil change. What do you guys think? Dealership still told him to wait till the 20% light come on for oil change, I think by that time the car will be a year old with same oil. they want 5k before first change. He will be getting the first 3 oil changes for free.

Did anyone say "change it now" yet? Ha ha.

Just do your own changes, but take advantage of the dealer program when the time comes. Is this car the hybrid or the regular 2.0L engine? They are both direct injection now, so watch out for fuel dilution. 5k changes are a good play to offset that.

Probably extremely minor to no difference in the long term. 99% of the general population doesn’t change out early and their cars still go on and live healthy lives

I would change it with a cheap full-sun like Supertech or Quaker State, since it’s only going to be in service for 2500 miles. But yes, I would change it. Maybe leave the factory filter even, but I would change the factory fill out.

I don't know if this applies to your son's contract but in my case, the contract says the first 3 oil changes are free but it has to be within 3 yrs. I went for the third oil change and was told that the 3 yrs has lapsed so I would have to foot the bill. I took my HRV home and did the oil change myself. Check the contract and he may rethink his schedule.

Convince him to let you change the oil now at 2500 miles. (let him read the comments here)
Then change it again at 7500 miles.
