Hello, i just purchased toyota camry. Im thinking about do 5k oci, I do a lot stop and go, toyota recommand 0w20 syn but can i go with 5w20 conventional? Also, Dealer gave me two free oil change at 10k/20k, shoud i follow them first and go 5k change after 20k? Thanks!

if toyota recommends syn, use syn. You didnt buy a new car for tens of thousands of dollars to cheap out on oil.

What does the owner's manual state for service intervals? Have you opened the manual yet?

+1 do what the manual says...

And read it carefully to see if your "do a lot stop and go" meets the conditions of severe service...I suspect it might...in which case, go with the service interval recommended for that...

Congrats on the new vehicle! I'd definitely follow Toyota's OCIs and type oil to use, at least while you're under warranty.

I typically get 1-2 mpg better with synthetic anyway, which will pay for the added expense of synthetic.

But also back it up with UOA. Ive found that with syn, severe stop and go, short trip service can be run with a non-severe interval.

+1. The engine builders know what the engine better than we.

The car calls for 0W-20 at 10k mile OCIs, but the owner's manual does allow for 5W-20 to be used, changed every 5k miles (if you interpret the owner's manual like I do).

Congratulations on your new car. Enjoy it for years.

I agree.

You may want to change oil filter at 5k but you may be able to skip the oil filter at 15k.

Toyota full synthetic 0W20 is very good at reasonable price of around $6/qt, or Mobil 1 0W20 at Walmart is only $26 for 5-qt jug.

+2. But what spec does this "0w-20 syn" meet that any other ILSAC GF-5 oil does not? Is there a Toyota Spec? We have DEXOS- I, Ford WSS, Honda HTO-06, VW 504.00. Where are the Subaru and Toyota specs? Full Synthetic means little to me as an engineer regarding overall oil performance. It's Like saying. "I eat only real cheese" - what does this mean? Get with it Toyota and Subaru - you are causing much agita!

The grade 0W20 used to be synthetic only, now it is available in syn-blend, Honda has it. I tried to point to Toyota 0W20 synthetic and that is what required by Toyota for 10k OCI.

Thanks guys. I wish my local dealer uses toyota syn for 10k oil changes. (they have a huge sign of QS, which i read it also pretty good oil)

Not here to cheap out. Just to see what other options i have and trying to see what other owners using. Yes, i did read manual. It just makes me confused why toyo recommends only 0w20, and that hard to find from my local stores or walmart.

Demand the dealer use Toyota synthetic 0W20 when you have your car in for free oil change. If needed, show them the Toyota manual. The semi-syn or conventional 5W20 may not be able to go the 10k miles OCI in Toyota engine.

Just start with making sure they give you 0w20 to begin with instead of 5w20 conventional. Dealer service departments are out to make money also.

I've used 5W-20 with no problems in my 2010 Camry.

I've got 50,000 miles on it now using either Mobil 5000 or YBP in 5W-20 at 5000 mi. intervals.

I doubt that the engine can tell the difference between a 5W-20 and a 0W-20.

I've been using the 0W-20 so far in my 2011 Camry.

I have to admit, the little 4 cyl. likes the Toyota oil.

The Toyota syn has a lot, I mean a lot, of moly in the oil.

Thanks for advice.

From my research, now i understand that how good is toyota 0w20 is...and now it makes me think that how about filter? will it work fine for 10k? hummm

S2krunner, do you have a Honda S2000 ? S2000 is also known as S2K.

Toyota 0W20 synthetic is one of the better 20 grade oil with very high VI above 200. Call some Toyota dealers in your area to get better price for buying a case or two, someone said they bought it for about $5-6/qt when they bought a case or two.

Yes i had an s2k, but traded in for camry. I joined BITOG when i had an s2k and 4runner.

I've been experimenting with 10w30 and 10W-40 oils in glass jars at different temperatures.
I've had the oils in a garage at 104 degrees Fahrenheit; at room temperature; in the refrigerator;
and in the freezer. At room temperature, 10w30 seems VERY thin to me. I'm afraid to try
5W-20, except for maybe in the freezer.
