checking MAXX battery

I'd hose off the manure first and see if there's a date code melted/branded/stamped into the case. It's got the prorated warranty, so even if it's a bunch of years old it's worth something at walmart-- without a receipt. Let them test it.

You can pry off the caps, but you'll rip the paper, and void the warranty.

That looks like a "sealed" maintenance free battery. The caps are not designed to be removed and you may have a hard time getting them back on if you try.

A load test and conductance test are your best options.

That battery is a little dirty... you might want to clean it up a little

Sears Diehard betteries are Johnson Control.

There are not really any cell covers to pry off. The plastic piece with the tab on the right end covers the cells I assume. As others have said, probably do not want to try and get it off. There is nothing wrong with the battery. I was just going to add distilled water if I could.

Here is a picture of the battery a little cleaner. Still looks like caps are non-removable. Just do a load test.

Here is what it came out of. Still some degreasing to do. I am using Simple Clean in purple container. I guess I just need to keep at it.

Thats a maintenance free battery. I believe the label says do not open, you might want to follow the direction of the manufacturer. If its not broken, don't fix it!

So what is difference about the construction of a low maint. battery vs a no maint. battery such that the no maint. battery never needs water to be added? Is a no maint. battey a SLA?

I have no desire to rip off plastic to get at the cells if the construction of the battery does not allow that.

Maintenance-free lead acid batteries are a Lead-Calcium chemistry. They lose much less water over time than lead antimony batteries, and also tend not to corrode the terminals as much due to less gassing.

These batteries are not AGM. They still have a liquid electrolyte.

Some lead-calcium batteries are maintenance accessible with removable caps... most Johnson Controls are, but there are exceptions. They still lose less water than lead-antimony, but should be checked occasionally.

Sealed batteries should have enough excess electrolyte to deal with any normal gassing and water loss for the life of the battery, assuming your car's charging system is functioning properly.

The "N" on the group size designates it as a Northern battery, which if I am not mistaken Exide makes for Wally World. Even on my Southern Johnson Controls battery it states that it is maintenance free. I would just run it till it gives trouble and then take it to Wallys to pro rate another one as the warranty even out of the free replacement can get you a new one for $30 or so.

I think its a hit or miss as for who makes it this week for Walyworld. This one is as you say an Exide. The one I got 3 years ago for my Jeep was an Exide. The one I got a few months ago to replace the one I got 3 years ago for my Jeep was a JCI. All from upstate NY Walyworlds.
