Right on! Same here. Guess that makes my cheapest oil to date $.35 a quart :^)
 
When prices were shooting up in 2004 ish a Walmart near me kept updating the computer but not the shelf tags. Now this was only stuff like a 5 quart jug going from $4.23 to $4.67. At the time if you complained on a pricing error they gave you the difference plus $3. So every day on my way home from work I'd grab a jug, check it with the self-price scanner, pay, hit customer service, and get exxon-made supertech for about $.25 a quart. But with the lines at customer service, and the slow old lady they stuck there as a form of torture to returners and other grousers, it almost resembled a 2nd job.

Advance auto had some closeout oil on their website that was no longer in stock. I'd buy it then show up with my computer printout and flirt my way into a substitution. Once got four gallons of Valvoline Synpower full synthetic for $4.95 a gallon minus 10% for ordering online. They didn't carry gallons anymore (stocking decision) so I had the guy give me 16 quarts instead. He helped me load my trunk.

I've gotten legitimate clearances like Delo 15w40 for $2.50/gal, 10-12 gallons, and no diesel vehicles at the time to run it in. The $.99 AZ Delo 30 weight. Also "illegitimate" ones where I find a homeless bottle on a Walmart shelf and self-scan it to see if one employee was saving it for themselves.

Dollar tree used to have tropartic syn blend 10w30 for $1/qt in around 2004 ish. I bought them out every time I saw any.
 
I'd say 3-4 years ago I scored 30+ quarts of Chevron & Halvoline oil (5w30 & 10w30). I don't remember exactly but either it was a bottle change or the store was renovating. Either way, I scored them for about 70 cents each.

That stash lasted quite a while and was my ARX oils.
 
Remember buying Castrol GTX in early 2004 for .88 cents a quart at Wal-Mart in a case of 12. Super Tech filters were $1.38 and Motorcraft ones $1.77.
 
I have had deals in the past 10-15 years where I paid something like .17 cents/qt. after rebate of EXXON motor oil from a store called AMES that is no longer in business in my area. And had another deal/rebate where the oil was .09 cents/qt. from RiteAid Pharmacy. Also around that time I was always getting Havoline oil for around .49 cents A/R and FRAM OCoD for .99-$1.49.

Recently in the past year+(Sept'09), PEAK oil with a ProLine filter(AKA Purolator Classic) from PepBoys, FAR. Actually, after tax/postage, $1.02 per 5qt/filter for an OCI which comes out to .17 cents per item...$1.02/6

In all instances above, a 12qt cases was required.

It's been dry lately unless I stumble across some straggler qts of name brand syn, syn blend or dino...Cheap!
3 qts of Castrol SynTec 10W40, 9 qts Quaker State Torque Power 10w30, $2-2.50/qt, 2qts of Valvoline DuraBlend $2/qt, various dinos for a buck each.

I all too often come across great name oil such as Valvoline conventional, MaxLife or GTX in the 20W50 grade for a buck each but I have no use for 20W50.

#2,19 oer quart, Quaker State Peak Performance and Advanced Durability and it is still on sale to this day, two different styles of label, same price. So, #2,19 a quart for name brand
 
Oh yes, and I almost forgot!
After discovering BITOG in '04 and the Product, Rebate, Sales section, I found a ton of synthitic oil at AutoZone all for a dollar/qt. Mobil 1, Havoline Syn, ValSynPwr, SynTec. I bought so many qts of syn oil for a dollar/qt that I needed help pushing the shopping cart up front to pay for it all! Then I visited another AutoZone and did the same thing. I can't remember how many qts of dino I scored also at that time for even less money, IIRC, .49Cents/qt. These AutoZone's were on the same street/RT only 6 miles apart crossing the city/town border lines. All SL/GF-3. I just finished all of my SL/GF-3 oils not long ago.

Now I won't finish my SM/GF-4 till the end of 2011 or into 2012 as my recent scores will never be as large as in 2004. Man, I had so much oil I could have started my own oil change business.

I'll bet that at one time I must have had over 120 + qts. Now, not even half of that at any one time.
 
I do notice the difference(0-none) in startup rattle my Altima 2.5 with the SM/GF-4 oil as compared to the SL/GF-3 oil. And there is little timing chain noise for the first couple of miles on very cold days using the SM/GF-4 as compared to the SL/GF-3. Can't wait to try the new SN/GF-5

Using the SL/GF-3 oil, I used to notice the timing chain noise during the first couple of miles after starting the engine when the temps dipped into the 50 deg F area. Now with the SM/GF-4, I barely hear it when it 10 deg F. I assuming that with the new SN/GF-5, the noise won't be there at all...I hope!
 
I forgot about this one. This too was last year about OCT'09.

How is PP @ .32 cents/qt.

AAP sale @ $4.99/qt. X 5qts = $24.95-$10.00(AAP coupon of $10 off $25 purchace)=$14.95. Sale Rep said that $24.95 was close enough. So, $14.95x1.08% tax=$16.15 + .44cents postage=$16.59 then a $15.00 Pennzoil Platinum Rebate for 5 qts came to $1.59 for 5qts or .32 cents/qt for PP and I bought 10 qts although seperatly at 5 qt at different times/1 week apart. 5qts of 5W20 and 5qts of 5W30.

I'll never see this again!

Each sales rep uses the $10 off $25 purchace a little differently.

Some will take the purchace as "close enough", then use the $10 coupon and add the tax after the $10 is taken off of your purchace(this is the best in our favor).

Others will add in the sales tax to achieve the $25 purchace.

And others still will want you to purchace the $25 or more B4 tax before they will let you/me use the coupon.

So, it depends on the sales rep/cashier!

Then there are the autoparts store rebates along with the oil company rebate where you can legally get 2 rebates. One from the store such as PB's and one from the oil co. Two different rebates/two different rebate address locations. Then too, the illegal part where you use multiple addresses and actually start making money. But of course, none of us have done this!

Thanks for the opportunity to confess something that has bothered me for many years.

There was a department store chain that was closing its doors (Bankruptcy) back in the late 1970s. At that time, Mobil 1 had just switched from being a 5W-20 oil to being a 5w30 (It was the only weight they offered). It was $3.95 a quart.

As a result, the store was offering 33% off everything in the entire store. I grabbed a case of Mobil 1 (It was in cans back then) and took it to the register.

The lady couldn't figure out how much the oil was. Then she found a list of prices, exclaiming, "Ah Ha"! 30 weight oil, normally $0.99 a quart, 1/3 off comes to $0.66 a quart.

She had apparently assumed because it was 5w30, that it was "a 30 weight oil", got the price of standard dino 30 weight, and assumed that was the proper price.

I went back and got several cases at that price.

The folly of my youth...I couldn't bear to do something like this now, and hope my kids aren't reading this post!
 
The 99 cent gallons of Delo at AZ, and the 33 cent quarts of Havoline Syn Blend and High Mileage from a couple years back are my best scores. Kept a lot of it, sold off the rest on CL quadrupling my investment on every item I sold. And those folks got great deals at that....
 
I'm still using the 49¢ Shell I bought a few years ago on rebate.

For reference, I believe the production cost of finished motor oil is over $1.50 a quart. If you can get oil for less than that now, they're selling it at a loss.
 
In the late 1990's and early 2000's I bought a bunch of Chevron supreme for under $.50 a quart. I ended up creating quite a stock pile. That happens when you can pick up a case of 12 for around $6 with tax. I think I bought 8 or 10 cases while that sale was going on. I don't think I bought oil for 3 or 4 years after that. Soon after 9/11, motor oil prices went up and never really came back down. The normal price for Havoline Formula 3 was usually under a buck a quart. Although recently, I have seen some petty good sales on oil.
 
About 12 years ago, WM's regular, everyday price on Super Tech oil was $.77/$.88 a litre, every day. We used to sell BOATLOADS of it.

Yes, it seems as though it was about that long ago when I would buy Super Tech or T2K for $8.88/12 qts to $9.24/12 qts U.S. + tax.
I would buy W*M oil when I didn't have my, small at the time stash(1-2 cases).

Does anyone here remember when SuperTech was called Tech2000?

You bet! I worked for WM from 1994 to 2001, and that whole time it was called 'Tech 2000'.

It only chaged over to 'Super Tech' in Canada a couple of years ago...
