Cheapest Oil change after head gasket replacement?

6 Bolt 4g63 AWD Engine (Eagle Talon TSI Turbo) I bought the car for a few hundred bucks and I am replacing the head gasket. Lots of coolant in the oil.

I plan on running new oil and filter for just a few minutes to get whatever remains of the coolant out, then I plan to change the oil with whatever I ultimately want. I have dropped the oil pan and cleaned it etc. Oil pump and pickup have beeen cleaned out as well.

When I changed a head gasket on my minivan, I just got the cheapest conventional oil/weight sold by walmart along with their cheapest filter and ran it for a few minutes. I hate running an oil and filter for such a short time so I want to find the cheapest oil and filter out there for a 10 minute run.


Any super cheap oil change specials that you are aware of?

Since you did a thorough job getting as much coolant out as possible, I'd go ahead and run some dino for 2000 miles then change it out.

That would give me time to see if I did the job right wouldn't it. I do have some Mag One Synthetic oil laying around...but it's 0w-20. I don't plan on putting it in any of my vehicles wither. DSM calls for 10w30 generally. Hmmmmm

Id go look at the price of a 15w40 HDEO vs 10w30 supertech or equivalent current API (not the cheap garbage with an API rating from 1936) store brand oil and see what is cheapest.

Nice thing with HDEOs is that you can get some big jugs... Like even 2.5gal jugs at WM.

So I'd personally fill the sump, turn the car on, idle a few minutes and then dump the oil. Then refill, do a change at 500, 1000, 2500, and then 5000 OCIs or whatever makes sense. Better safe than sorry. Id probably also do a used oil analysis at least on the first change after the flush out, so that I could see if there was any bad action going on. Id still expect to see some Na and K in there, even withot coolant ingress.

Neat car, always liked them, though they are tiny to actually sit in.

Thanks for the ideas! No pics right now. My Galant VR4 (same engine, configureation, and drivetrain takes care of the lack of space.

I've got some peak 10w40 on standby for this sort of thing, but that sale has long expired.

When I did head gasket work on a dodge spirit 2.5 I used 2.5 quarts of "Car and driver" 10w30 from target and an undersize filter to get the peanut butter out. I wanted just enough oil to cover the pickup and run for ten minutes, and figured two half-changes would be better than one full one.

If you can wait, amazon has some okay oil deals. If you want to go big, 55 gallons of mag 1 10w30 work out to about $8 and change per gallon.

Can you just go to your town dump/ recycle station and grab a jug of someone else's used oil?

Our oil actually goes into a closed pit. I didn't know about the 55 Mag 1 deal.
 
Thanks for all of the posts. I think that I am going to run it for a little bit to see if I get any oil leaks or similar horrors. That will give me the opportunity to get rid of it, should I find myself too annoyed.

Also if there is a plus size filter for about the same cost as listed filter, I'd be tempted to run it.
 
If you have another vehicle, change the oil in that and use the oil from the other vehicle to flush it out.

That's not a bad idea either, but i would add that you could still run a fresh batch of oil through it after using the used oil. If there is any contamination left in the system, 1 drain and fill isn't going to get it out.
