We have "cheap" Mobil 1 5w-50 appearing on the UK shelves of Asda/Walmart but it does not appear to be the same as the UK spec oils as it's not API SL and carries no ACEA specs.

Here are the brief details on the can

Mobil 1 Formula 5W50
Race proven, fully synthetic engine oil designed to provide unsurpassed protection for passenger cars and light duty diesel engines. Especially suitable for engines fitted with turbo-chargers.
Exceeds API SJ/CF, SAE 5W-50

Can anyone shed any light as to its origins and quality?

Anyone have comparative tech data on the two oils?

It appears Mobil are producing a cheaper version for Walmart.

Cheers
Simon

Mobil 1 5W-50 is not sold in North America.

It is sold in Europe, Australasia, and South America.

The current product meets API service category SL and three ACEA specs.

You might look for the product code and a country of origin on the container. ExxonMobil customer service can tell where and when it was made if you inquire on-line.

My off-hand guess is that it is the prior product and Walmart found a warehouse full somewhere.

If that's the case, it has higher zinc and phosphorous levels, little or no moly, different blend stocks, and some additive differences compared to the current production.

If the price is right, it could be a good deal.

Mobil does not make different versions of Mobil 1 for mass marketers. The brand is too valuable.

M1 5W50 is a hot seller in OZ. I have heard a lot of them talk about it on this site. M1 is too important of a "name" for Exxon/Mobil to do anything to hurt it's reputation. M1 sells more synthetic oil then any other company in the world!

What Mickey_M said. Wal-Mart seems to be able to find a lot of older warehoused stock. My local Wal-Mart just re-stocked Chevron Supreme with the SJ rating.

Everything else is SM pretty much already. Looks new, but it has to be several years old. Perhaps yours is the older Tri-Synthetic formula from a warehouse.
