Cheap all around drill......this one?

Craftsman was good qaulity stuff years ago...at this point it would not be my choice. About 15 years ago I received a Ryobi cordless 18V multi tool jumbo combo tool set. It was super cheap to buy at HD, and I have used it to work many diy projects big and small. It functions perfectly although I did upgrade to 18 LI batteries and charger about 5 years ago.

They had this deal last year all around Christmas time. Meanwhile it was the same price for ONLY 2 batteries too. Lol.

I say Dewalt or if OP doesn't mind spending a bit more, the Rigid.

Okay, I own a Milwaukee 18V Fuel, so some people might think I'm bashing Ridgid, but I'm not. All I'm saying is that there is a lot of red tape with the Ridgid lifetime warranty. Everything has to be registered and the receipts have to be kept, including the replacement batteries. I've also heard (by co-workers, not by me) that things have to be carried into the service centers, not mailed, and that not every Home Depot is a registered service center.
Just check it all out first before writing the check.

It's not that bad in my experience.

Yes, you have to register on line, and send in your proof of purchase. That goes for each component ie. The Drill, the Battery and the Charger.

As for claiming on the warranty (I have claimed for batteries twice. I claim at the first hint that they are short cycling) I just phone my service depot (it's not a HD store in my case) give them my registration # and the item model # and they phone me (in about 3 days) when I can go in to do an over the counter exchange, and a 1 800 # to re-register the new battery.
It's really not bad when you consider the cost of batteries.

I bought my fist Ridgid tool over 5 or 6 years ago. Prior to that, I was replacing drills about every 2 years, mainly due to battery failier.

I have had Craftsman, but honestly don't care much for them.

Dewalt were OK but not as nice as the Ridgid, and for me, the warranty seals the deal.

BUT, having said that, it will be interesting how they deal with warranty claims in 5 or 10 years from now!

how in the world can you go wrong with the lithium kit under $50? it would be insane to pay $40 to rebuild your batteries.

yes M18 fuel is great but you could not get a screw for that drill under $50!

I do have the C3 drill and that lithium battery along with the 1/2 impact wrench. You can NOT find a better deal anywhere.

I love how somebody asks advice for $50 purchase and guys tell him how good his $400 purchase is!

I have had C3 tools for years.
If I made my living with them, I would have Milwaukee.
But since I don't and don't feel the need to drop three bills, the C3 is just fine.
I have 3 drills, the circular saw, the impact wrench, and the inflator.
I fully agree the old ni-cads were junk. It used to be as cheap to buy a set to replace the batteries, thus the 3 drills.
However, the lithium batteries have been a great improvement and they are a good value for the money.

A wise friend once told me "A poor man can only afford to buy the best tools, because he can only can afford to buy them once."

No one is telling him to spend $400, but you get what you pay for when you spend $50 on a cordless drill. I went through several cheap drills from several different brands before I decided to pony up the dough for a decent one and be done with it. If I had bought the good one in the first place, it would have saved me money in the long run. It would have also saved me the frustration of having junk that doesn't work when I need it.

I'd just get a 1/2" rigid on sale and fill out their lifetime service agreement paper work and never buy a battery or a drill again. You've already experienced the expensive battery blues, don't repeat it again in 5 years.
