hey guys i installed a supertech filter on my 2004 tacoma prerunner 2.7L on my last oil change. Now that the mornings are cold I'm hearing a loud ticking and slight vibrations from my engine for about 30 seconds only after I place it into either drive or reverse to get out of my driveway. It doesn't make the sound beforehand while idling.
When the temps are warmer in the morning or at any point after the chilly temps I do not get any noise at all.
Would this be the infamous drain back thing?

not if it doesnt do it on park I dont think. Try switching filters to a different kind. some filters dont like certain cars.

I had a 2001 Tundra that sounded like a diesel on cold mornings. No change in filter or oil would curb the noise. I think Toyota just puts too much clearance in their engines and you get a cylinder slap when it is cold.

Go back to whatever filter brand you previously used, and see if the noise goes away.

This is the cheapest and easiest troubleshooting that you can do at this point.

piston slap is very common in the 2.7L , on cold start.
but like others said try the old brand of filter and see if their is any change. mike

You can try a different filter, but I can't see it being the source. If this is a short trip vehicle, get some injector cleaner like Amsoil PI or perhaps Gumout Regane COMPLETE fuel system cleaner. You may be hearing CCDI.

Try a different filter... My wife's Mirage has the same problem with Fram Extended Guard. My old Saturn had a problem with Proline. Some cars don't like certain filters.

Not very, about mid 60's to high 50's around 5am.

I've had the truck since new but had never noticed this sound before, even when I lived in fridged atlanta, GA did it make this sound.

Truck has 59K and is driven about 15 miles to work and back each day.

I believe mt last filter was a fram but i also switched to Pennsoil yellow dino oil the sametime. Not sure if that makes any differnece at all.

Tacomas have an intake manifold issue that make that clatter until it is warmed up sometimes. Maybe this is it.
I don't know the details but I remember reading it was a really common complaint.
