can oil filters make noise?

I have a question. I have a 77 chevy with a new engine and transmission. Built both of them around Christmas time and installed them about 4 months ago.
I noticed about a month ago, that on first startup in the morning, when I give the truck a little gas to back out of the driveway, I get this realy loud huming noise. If I press a tad harder on the gas, it goes away, or just idleing, its not there either. Just at one point of loading. It sounds like air going through a check valve if I had to compare it to something. After about 1/4 mile, its fine for the day, but does it again the next morning.

I checked with a transmission builder friend and he says its very un-likely to be the transmission, but mentioned the bypass valve in the oil pump and also the bypass valve in the filter.

I need to get my son up early so he can hold the brake and try to duplicate the noise while I"m underneith, but I've looked myself and have found nothing loose that could vibrate. I"m kinda stumped on this one!

Anyone ever had an oil filter make noise before?

I have 10w30 Amsoil and a stock pump. First start of the day pegs the guage at 60+ pounds. Its a Napa Gold long Chevy filter. I hate to change it and dump another quart of my 'spensive oil out just as a test! LOL

Why not back into the driveway and drive out forward some mornings and see if the noise is there. Make sure all fluids are topped off.
And, is there a mechanical fan clutch that might be tempermental during the 1st daily start?

Why such a thin oil in AZ? wouldn't a 40wt be better?

It does it foward or reverse, or with holding the brake and giving a little gas.

As far as the oil, its hot here, but 10w30 works fine.

Do you have a clutch fan on the engine? They can make noise, a roaring sound till the engine RPM's increase.

OK, so it is your transmission

Flush that fluid. Which transmission? who rebuilt it?

I'd grab a new oil filter, swap it, invest in any topoff oil(like Mobil 1/GC/...), finally rule out that oil filter and look for the real mechanical problem(like a modulator or vacuum leak that seals when warm).

I'd inspect the exhaust system to see if something is vibrating.
After running a few minutes, it may expand enough from the heat to quit vibrating. It could even be a loose baffle in the muffler.

I put on a new Delco last night and this morning, no noise. Hope it stays gone! Going to cut the filter open today and see what gives.
