I'm getting ready to sell my bike due to lack of use. It is an '08 CBR1000RR with 2,800 miles on it. Since buying it new, I have done four trips where I ride it about 800 miles through the mountains in 5 days. The last trip was in 2010. Since then I force myself to ride it about once every 4-6 months to help prevent rot and to run some new fuel through it. Draining the fuel and refilling before each ride.

The last oil change (and brake fluid flush) was in April of 14, since then I have put just over 100 miles on it in a half dozen ~20 mile trips. I use M1 10w40 motorcycle oil. It is never been started without a ride of at least 15 miles. Previously, I had been changing the oil annually or before each trip, whichever occurred first.

I feel compelled to change the oil (and possibly coolant) before selling it. Should I bother? acid formation, etc. occur under these conditions?

The cost of doing the work is not a factor - but I want the next owner to have the best possible experience and I would hate to have something like 2 year old oil ruin it. At the same time, it's a pain to do the work.

The sale is of course due to the usual reason of kids and lack of time/safety.

I would not bother, but tell the next owner that this detail should be done soon after they take possession. They usually have their own idea as to what oil is best..right?

I guess you're going to need to change your forum name?

If the oil doesn't look like it has water contamination and the coolant looks fine, I'd leave it in. I don't like to hear that the oil was just changed anyways, it seems like the seller could be hiding something and they probably used something cheap.

I'll probably keep my current name. It has served me well since the early 90's (CBR600F2). And who knows - maybe someday the kids will grow up and hopefully become self sufficient.

Was there anything about the bike that made you less apt to ride it or did life just change and the bike lost priority?

I wouldn't change it because the new owner will anyway

From his other post, it appears "Kids" happened, as they will. I took about 15 years away from riding, for the same reason. Been back to it for the last 15.

I wouldnt for one reason.....
When I buy a used vehicle I go through my regimen myself. I drain and refill all fluids/filters et al myself with my own preferred products. So if you share with the buyer the status he will probably appreciate it and feel like nothing is wasted when he puts his own preferred products in his new motorcycle.

I'd leave it. Most owners have a oil preference and the new owner will probably change it anyways. If I buy a used car, I ALWAYS change the oil/filter, even if they tell me that they just changed the oil. I like to know what the car is actually running, and the only way to do that is to change it yourself.

Leave it. As others said, it's the first thing the next owner will do anyway. Always makes me sad to hear someone giving up bikes, I sincerely hope you come back to them someday.

I rode it yesterday to make sure all is well. I do plan to get back into it later. My dad took a break from riding for about 20 years and then got back into it and is still enjoying it.

I road raced and commuted on bikes through my twenties, did track days and mountain trips through my thirties, and have been tapering off through my forties.

On the one hand I have ridden well over 200K miles - many on the track - and escaped with only minor scrapes and bruises. I feel like I have gotten away with it for a long time.

On the other hand, it is in my blood and once I have time available I will do it again.

Life is a lot different with kids and a regular job. My previous career gave me lots of freedom to travel and work odd hours, but I rarely saw my wife. Once I had kids I know longer wanted to be gone full time - including motorcycling trips. Riding in south Florida is not much fun.
