I have a Craftsman riding mower with 16 horse Briggs engine. I am currently running Supertech synthetic 10 w 30 and a factory oil filter. The mower gets about 40 hours of use per season.
I plan to change the oil every fall, before storing the mower with a dry fuel system and fogging oil in the cylinder. How often should I change the oil filter? Factory Briggs filters are 10 dollars and discarding a filter after 40 hours seems wasteful.
I have read that a cheaper automotive filter will work, however, how do you know if the bypass on an automotive filter will open quickly enough to save the engine? For that matter, how do you know if a given filter even has a bypass? I like the idea of a cheaper, automotive filter that I can discard every year just to be sure of having a good filter.
thanks in advance for any advice
