My neighboor sold me a used riding mower, it has a 17.5 HP tecumseh engine. It is sold under the name of white. Mower has sat for two years, I got it for next to nothing. I Rebuilt the carborator since it was dumping a-lot of fuel into the oil, changed the oil and filter with NAPA 10-40 and a proselect, put a new air filter, replaced the fuel pump that had a massive leak, greased the zerks, put tubes in the front tires that were flat, and tossed a new champ plug into it. Even put a new fuel filter on it since it had none. Runs like a champ now, 130 bucks invested.

Anyone have experiences with this type of riding mower?

If it's a White, it's an MTD variant. Probably a 600 series with the transmatic? That's a big Tecumseh single cyl for sure.

Sorry, I havent looked at the mower, been busy. It has a variable trans, as far as the deck goes it is somwhere near 30 something inches.

It's probably a 38" deck. I've not seen an MTD deck smaller than that on a front engine rider. The 38-42" offer a good cut. It's just the variator trans that I can't stand.

That's a good deal. Paid close to $1k 15 years ago for a 38" MTD rider with the 12hp B&S engine. Used to mow about 3hrs a week from April to October. Was a very reliable rider. Good luck with it.

I have a Murray with that same 17.5 hp Tecumseh single on it. Runs like a charm, really. I bought the whole rider for $150, and all it needed was a new deck belt.

I never really cared for Tecumsehs, but this one runs nice. And I'd prefer them to Briggs any day. Mine, however, does not have the oil filter option (it just has the blockoff plate). I'd like to find the oil filter adapter for it and all the filter option.

I just picked up riding lawn mower myself a Ariens 1028 (model 927046) I had to put some money in to mine too.

I have the same engine and mower, a 42" cut. I ordered a filter adapter several years ago for mine, I believe through Jacks small engines (online). IIRC, it was about $40. I use a supertech filter and Delo 15w40 with no issues in the 12 years I have had this rider.

Thanks, Tim. Yeah, the filter mount is rather expensive. I've been trying to find it used, to no avail yet, but I haven't been trying all that hard either. It's a good mower. I don't use it much at all, but do pull an aerator with it every now and then. I just bought it for a "project". I ended up waxing the whole thing, taking the front grille off and repainting it and polishing the headlight lenses, etc. It's cherry now! :)
