Off my turbo 5efe Tercel autocross car for last season which I did not run a full normal season. 1783 miles. Using HPL Pcmo 5w30. I did have a turbo failure halfway thru.

Top cap fell off. Glue not fully covering pleats. I tried looking with a light...no obvious thru holes yet. Bunch of trash where my magnets were (hopefully likely from only
the turbo failure, glad I run magnets now). Currently wicking and will update on Monday.

Fresh HPL pcmo 5w30 went back in and a Pronto PO4476ex.

It must at least get people giving a double take as I haven't seen a tercel in a long time. Cool. I've wanted to take my Chevy cavalier and install one of those jgtc body kits and a 330 hp 3S-GTE (which apparently will bolt in) from a Toyota mr2. Chevy made a deal with Toyota and built rhd Cavaliers for the Japanese market with toyota badging.

Was that on the leaf spring end, or the ADBV end? If on the leaf spring end, probably dirty oil leak paths going on there. If the ADBV was over that, might have been sealing the gaps. Were both end caps like that, or just one?

The ADBV is designed to be held by the inside of the center tube. Its possible the leaf spring pressure held the flat part against that gap, but under any amount of PSI I seriously doubt it did much. It would come down to the difference bettween delta P of the media vs delta P of that seal?

It was the top cap towards the adbv/engine block.

I lightly tapped the bottom one but it didnt budge. Ill pry on it more after wicking to see if it comes off. The top one literally fell off.

The ADBV is pretty thick and stiffer in the area where it seals on the end cap, so yes it would depend on how much the rubber flexed under dP, and how much force the leaf spring was putting on that interface. Definitely better to have the ADBV on that flaky end cap than the leaf spring.

I don't get in a twist about an endcap popper alone. But here if that's how the potting looked (not covering entire tube) as the endcap fell off when opened, then yeah could be an issue. Also, looking at the bypass piece seal area surprising imo no light seen from it. On the plus side, it did come with a silicone adbv which even though supposed to be spec on XL, many anecdotes here from RA have been seen with nitrile.

Thanks for c&p.

This should be what the newest Fram Ultra looks like with the nylon/plastic center tube. In this size, fram 4967. Haven’t seen one cut open yet.

The pleats are sticking out past the glue on one side and the center tube is clearly off to one side. Don’t know how the end cap was even fitting.

The end cap still fitted because the OD of the end cap is still larger than the OD of the media pleats, and the media cartridge was shifted all the way to one side of the end cap, which made the center tube no co-axial with the end cap.
