central air unit blowing hot air - capacitor replaced

the secondary side can handle 1.66A on a healthy 40va transformer, a 2A fuse is fine and either will work in a dead short situation. two drawbacks I could point out with the 2A fuse is

1) if its a multi-tap transformer and the correct supply voltage isn't wired correctly which I have seen in commercial applications many techs don't check their line side and will accidentally wire a 208 system on the 240 tap you're now dropping the usable va which will increase amperage draw and could cause contactor chatter and other issues.

2) voltage sag will cause the same as mentioned in the above. grid demand and units running for extended periods of time could pull down transformer power and cause this.

I am not an HVAC guy but I believe that's mainly the reason in the field you will find a 3A fuse installed.

Thank you for the info. I will pick up some 3 amp fuses because I do not trust our electricity generator to keep the voltage as stable as they should during times of peak demand!
 
What brand/style of HVAC system has no condenser??? Is it something new and unique to Florida?

You are absolutely correct, the thermodynamics simply does not work if there’s nothing to condense the refrigerant…
 
I keep one of the universal ones on hand, they come in handy to troubleshoot with. They won't fit where a 5 or a 7.5 are intended to go but you can configure them to act as 5s or 7.5s until you can get an actual replacement.

Your new HVAC system uses Electronically Commutated Motors (ECM) instead of the traditional Permanent Split Capacitor (PSC) motors.

 
Here is the carrier unit (we had a 4 ton and a 2 ton system installed to replace a couple of 10 year old units, this is the 4 ton).

It’s a horizontal, high efficiency condenser, with a variable speed direct drive motor that doesn’t have a capacitor. It’s also much quieter than the traditional condenser. So far, we are very pleased with the installation and performance of the system. We had both the air handler and condensers replaced.

By the way, condenser and capacitor used to be interchangeable terms - a “condenser” in a points-type ignition system is, in fact, a capacitor, but in this discussion, clearly, they are quite different.

Thanks - I didn’t do a ton of research on motor design, but the SEER improvement was enough to convince me to go with this unit. Naturally, in FL, we will have a large cooling load, and our electric bill is enormous, so an increase in SEER is worth paying for.

The mini-split that we had installed (for my future garage workshop) has the same kind of outdoor condenser, and similar high SEER rating.
 
Inverter compressors don’t require caps they’re variable speed and have a soft start.

This product is alkaline-based, 15%-40% sodium hydroxide accdg to a quick web search, which can damage aluminum tubing and fins if used in too high concentrations or applied on those parts for too long. Do not get it on your skin or eyes, use gloves and eye goggles! Be sure to very very thoroughly rinse it off after use.

Frankly, I would just use a non-acidic non-alkaline cleaner for my air con. And still thoroughly rinse it off.
