Cellphone interference?

I live in a small retirement apartment building. Often when I speak with folks on the upper floors, using cellphones, there's a lot of interference that I get from the folks I'm talking with. The connection seems to break up, there seems to be, for lack of a better description, cross channel talk and noise, and it's difficult to hear or understand the people I'm speaking with. I've not encountered the problem when talking with folks on the lower (1st) floor, the level where my apartment is.

Any thoughts on what the problem may be and how it may be fixed?

insulation up there may be metal backed and blocking the signal. Have them go to a window.

We have the same issue at my house. Cant talk if in the rear bedroom

Try turning on Wi-Fi calling.

If your phone is 5G switch to 4G and see what happens. Is your phone operating running thru your WiFi when your home? If so switch off the WiFi and see what happens.

Are you and/or them on wifi calling?

If so, there could be a lot of issues without knowing exactly how the wifi AP setup is - if there is any.

I remember generally crystal clear connections, even oversea connections, 20 and even 30 years ago. Now it's often weak signals, interference, dropped connections, and other shenanigans even when calling someone three blocks away. My hearing is great so that's not it.

If your phone is 5G switch to 4G and see what happens. Is your phone operating running thru your WiFi when your home? If so switch off the WiFi and see what happens.

I have been wondering about 5G and phone calls I just recently upgraded to the iPhone 13 from an LTE model, calls on speakerphone are absolutely horrible It's like talking on a walkie talkie for starters I'm told my end is choppy and they can't hear me and if the other end is talking I'm like non existent on the line they cant hear me if I decided to say talk over who's talking.

IMO cell phone voice service has deteriorated significantly since the carriers dropped 3G GSM/CDMA service and transitioned to 4G/5G VOLTE/VOIP service. I don't think that any carrier, phone manufacturer/model, or OS is better than any other in this regard.

My Samsung A53 5g has not been set to 5g for over two years. Too many people have 5g internet around here and it does funky things to your 5g phone. Since switching it to 4g LTE I have no issues.

Being I notice absolutely no gains having 5G in my area maybe too rural maybe too over crowded I’m going to do the same switch 5G off. Thank you for some clarity.

You can turn off the 5g by going into settings and change it from Auto to LTE

SETTINGS>CELLULAR>CELLULAR DATA OPTIONS>VOICE AND DATA

Once there put a checkmark at LTE

It’s also possible that your last phone had Wi-Fi calling turned on and you may not have it turned on the new phone
You can turn on Wi-Fi calling SETTINGS>CELLULAR>WIFI CALLING and see if it helps

Both phones have WiFi calling enabled. Would you recommend me turning it off?

I honestly don’t know I don’t think it matters but if you’re having trouble with phone calls, you may want to try switching off 5G from automatic to LTE. Some locations the phone will fight to use the 5G band however, in many places, the 5G band is a weaker single for lack of better words.
