Now for the “ Rest of the Story”. The two fans with the Casablanca wall controllers were actually remote control units. The center button was for reversing the direction. Duh, I should be dipped in hot 5w30. 
Here is a photo of the type of wall switch for the remaining fans.
So it wasn’t totally a waste of time, here are a few more shot of some of the components inside the fan body. There was also a connector for an optional light that could have been added and controlled by the remote control. Also, the remote control module was plug and play. The chain was for manually controlling a light, AFAIK.

I have two of those, and they’re still working after 20 years, from the wall switch, but the remotes died long ago. ☠.
And here is a complete kit which is plug and play on my Casablanca which is 11 years old.

I have a large Hunter fan with wide blades that I installed a number of years ago. It had the lights as well. Installation was straightforward and all the wires were color matched to the appropriate plug module. Easy as pie or so I thought.
I got it all wired up and closed up then tested it. Everything worked except the lights. Took it apart and everything matched the instruction manual. Still no lights. After several rounds of playing with different routing I came up empty. The lights are just decorative now. I never figured it out. The fan works well.

Does it have the chain gizmo?
It does. It has two in fact. One to change fan speed and one for the light. It also has the slide switch to reverse the direction.
