Caterpillar Oil Filter

At work we get our oil and filters from our local Cat store, since I get a discount threw them I asked the sales rep about a oil filter for my truck since I could by a case of them to last me all year cheaper then buy a filter individual from a retailer. He did a cross - reference from 2 filters that I always use which is a fram ph16 and baldwin B34 and this number came up Cat 150-4140 as a cross reference from both oil filters the rep said it is for synthetic oil and is used for newer sked steer loaders and small backhoes. The caterpillar Sked steer loader that calls for that filter runs 15w40 synthetic oil with operating oil pressure of 50lbs. The rep said that the information he had on the filter had a max running oil psi of 200lbs. Would this filter be safe to run on my truck? 2000 dodge dakota 3.9 and I run Mobil 1 full synthetic 5 30. Since he found a cross-reference using two different filters in his Caterpillar catalog and came up with the same Cat 150-4140, then there should be no problem using it on your truck.

You should ask him if there is any efficiency data on that filter - ie, xx% efficient @ yy microns. It's probably pretty efficient if used on Caterpillar equipment.
 
Very true, that's one thing I forgot to ask was filtration data and I can't seen to find that information from a Google search.
 
Years ago I worked at a place that had one of those hydraulically powered oil filter crushers, made in Mt. Vernon, Washington if I remember right. The Caterpillar filters were the only ones that had to be crushed twice to flatten them, all the others could be flattened in one shot.
 
Thank you guys!! I'm gonna go ahead and get one and try it out, I'll monitor the oil gauged a idle for few min and take a short test drive. It won't take me long to rack up miles as I am at 3k on my oil change and gonna change to this cat filter for the last 3k afterwards I'll do a cut open so we can all see what it collects I can't find anywhere on this forum where someone has run a cat filter on a personal car. I'm eager
 
Oil filters have no idea what base stock oil you're using; that the sales rep said it was for "synthetic oil" use tells me a lot about him (typical sales rhetoric).

Admittedly, there are some filters out there that are marketed for use with syns because the O/FCI is intended to be longer, and so the filter may be made with much greater holding capacity, under the presumption of longer operational duration. But that is not exclusive to syns.

The filter he's spec'd seems appropriate by the info you've given; the xref at Fram and Wix agree with the general criteria you listed. However, to the best of my knowledge, CAT does not have direct fit recommendations for personal-use vehicles; if I'm wrong then someone please correct me and it would be great to see a product listing if available. I did find a CAT crossreference page, but it would not open for me this morning, so I have no ability to answer my own question at this point. Here is what I found:

The image does not look like what you need, but that may just be a generic image they use. When I type in that filter (150-4140) I see nothing that tells me about it's size or physical characteristics, so you'll have to trust the sales rep.

Also, ask the sales rep if they will warrant the filter, and any subsequent damage, should an unfortunate event happen. Often when a "will fit" filter is used, and it's not a recommended application by the maker, you risk initial denial of warranty coverage. You'll have to weigh the ROI against the potential for for engine damage and subsequent legal battle. I am not saying it will happen; I am only suggesting you invetigate the warranty. Don't take his word for it; ask for it in writing. That will QUICKLY separate the truth from the bovine pile. Those that will stand behind their product recommendations will put it in writing.

BTW - I have to ask because I find this difficult to believe ...
You can get a "case" of filters for less than one retail filter at an autoparts store? I would imagine you could find any decent brand filter for $5 retail or less, but you can get a case of CAT brand filters for less than that? That's a bit hard for me to swallow. And that case of filters will only last you a year? Just how long is your FCI, anyway?

Um...I took it that he meant he could buy a case of 12 Cat filters cheaper than he could buy 12 individual filters. But maybe my mind was just filling in the unknown.
 
They sure are pretty filters. Right up there with the Baldwin and Fram High Performance IMO.

A quick Google search made it look like the ADBV is nitrile? I would have thought silicone would have been used given the applications they will be used on. That being said, I bet they are very comparable to Baldwins.

If they are cheap and quiet on start up, I would run them as well. My Jeep is spec'd for the same filter as your truck and there is a Cat dealership about 30 miles from me.
