CAT Oil: Viscosity and Ambient Temperature Chart

This is a CAT Oil Viscosity and Ambient Temperature Chart for Diesel and Gas Engines. Hope you find it interesting.

Temperatures are in Celcius and (Fahrenheit), Winter ratings are minimum temp and normal ratings are maximum

0W = -40 (-40)

5W = -30 (-22)

10W = -20 (-4)

15W = -15 (5)

20W = -10 (14)


20 = 10 (50)

30 = 40 (104)

40 = 50 (122)

50 = 60 (140)

Even though these numbers are probably not optimal for every engine. The chart looks like a pretty good guideline. Thanks for posting this.

Would be nice if the oil companies put min max use temps on the back label of the oil bottle. I recall seeing a min temp on the Motorcraft 15w40 and I think it was 20 F, a bit more conservative than the above chart, but it would tend to vary between oils of the same grade depending on the exact mix.
