Castrol's Titanium or Royal Purple's Synerlec?

Going to change oil soon in my '90 300ZX and thought I'd come on here for some advice/info on what's "better" per se between an oil with Titanium as an additive over Royal Purple's Synerlec.

From what I understand, Synerlec is a better mix for fuel efficiency, and Titanium is a substitute for ZDDP which is a better protectant.

OR if the choice is null between the two, and I should just get whatever is on special.. lol .. Thanks

EDIT: I've also seen Rotella T5 at my local Walmart in a 10w30 that's an attractive bargain at 16.00. I know it's not a full synthetic, but I'm aware Rotella makes a fine product regardless

I'm personally not a fan of either product, just based on personal opinion but both are high quality and more or less perform just as well as the other high end synthetics on the market. I tend to side with M1 and Pennzoil/Shell synthetics. If you're interested in a Rotella product, try the T6 Synthetic 5W-40. Widely available, great value and a nice ad pack being that it's a HDEO.

No offense here, but the facts are the oil doesn't need to be purple to be good. And Ti is a little new to know much about yet.

Rotella and Delo are the undiscovered heroes for price versus quality.

If you drive the car hard look for HTHS over 3.4 and robust add package with over 1200ppm Zn and > 200ppm molybdenum di(tridecyl)dithiocarbamate. Ignore any advertising terms. Be aware that most all N.A full synthetic oils are not full synthetic even when advertised as such. Not necesarily a bad thing - just a cost consideration.

The New Edge W/ FST (Ti) is so-so IMO. I was hot to use it and I have spent more money on an oil with an apparently worse base stock than the SM version of Edge. I liked the old stuff much better and it was a better formula (higher VI., lower PP, and lower CCS.

I can't speak on the RP...I have never used it.

Just do not use the new Edge w FST unless you get it for free.

RP is a good oil from all that I have heard.

Wow crazy fast replies guys lol thanks

I know the HDEO's like Delo and T6 are good, I was just considering something a bit more energy conserving. Basically I'd like something to help out the MPG factor. I only mention that because the first round of Edge was fantastic, and netted me a 0.5 mpg increase. Nothing major, but in my old lifted Jeep, anything helped.

Right now I have a Kendall Liquid Titanium SynBlend 10w40 that will be changed out. I added some MMO to the mix, otherwise I would have had it tested.

Can anyone chime in to say if the RT6 5w40 is as fuel efficent as RT5 10w30? I know the weights are different, but I'm curious if the "full" synthetic lubricates better.

If I wasn't in a pinch, I'd order some LubroMoly or Motul oil, but I'm trying to wrap up a project that's taken a month and a half to complete.

When you gutys talk RP you better say which RP. The race stuff is OK and the street stuff is nothing special. Lucas Racing Synthetic would be better than RP API cert street oil for high performance street use.

If you go with RP,either get the "old" formula (says "with Synerlec" on the bottle) or go with the HPS. Both have the high zddp. The new formula doesn`t have either the Synerlec additive,or the boosted zddp (as told to me by RP themselves),BUT,it`s a total group IV/V oil, which they told me as well. Has no grp III mixed in it,so it`s not a synthetic blend. I had a very good uoa with the "old" RP 20W50 in my n/a Z:

I saw that thread, thanks for sharing!

How was your MPG with the 20w50?

The thing is, since I'm an NA and I don't do autocross, I'm basically going for efficiency. I just REALLY like the styling/interior of the Z32, but no need for high horsepower or anything of that sort.

This particular uoa was a mix of short everyday drives to and from work, some long high speed hwy drives, and several wot runs. My mpg`s were awesome with the 20W50. Especially on extended highway drives. I took several 3hr interstate runs at 80+ mph continuously and I got incredible mileage. VG30DE engines really like the thicker oils. FSM even says to step up to a 40-50 weight if you`re racing or driving extended high speeds.

But for daily driver environment, any 10W40 will be perfect for your car. I actually prefer Valvoline Conventional for my everyday oil. Mobil 1 10W40HM is my other pic,as you can see. It`s a synth,it`s cheap as dirt, and can be found at Walmart in the 5 quart jugs. Here`s my Mobil 1 used oil analysis:

I was also going to recommend Quaker State 10w40 conventional. That`s what my friend uses in his modded Z32 twin turbo. He races his on a regular basis and it runs smoooooooooth on that oil!

Then you want to run a high VI oil.
As was suggested, Mobil 1 0W-40 with it's 185 VI is not a bad place to start although since you drive conservatively it's 3.8cP HTHSV is very likely heavier than you need. If you want to maximize fuel economy then you'll want to run the oil with the lowest HTHSV that still provides at least the minimum oil pressure (hot) that's spec'd for your engine at high rev's. Do you have an OP gauge?
In all likelyhood a premium 5w30 syn like Mobil 1, Pennzoil Platinum or Pennzoil Ultra with it's HTHSV of 3.1cP will still provide plenty of OP and if you want a higher ZDDP level just add a couple of oz's of a ZDDP supplement like Red Line Break-In additive; no need to use an overly heavy, low VI, HDEO like T5 10w30.

+1
This is the scientific or more objective way of deciding what you want in an oil. CATERHAM is right, if you want some slight MPG increase, use an oil with lower HTHSV. (So take out the HDEO's) and go with an oil that CATERHAM has recommended. If you are worried a bit about wear and need a thicker oil Mobil 1 0w40 is one of the best. You get some of both worlds.

And I am not just blindly agreeing with CATERHAM, I have just been proven wrong by him to much so I am learning

Good sir I believe you've befuddled me lol I'll have to brush up on a few of those terms.

I really like the idea that you've brought up, to use a 5w30 like Mobil 1 (not a personal fan, but can't deny people love Mobil 1) and a ZDDP additive.

Though I drive conservatively, I do enjoy the VG30DE's pep every now and then. I guess to keep it relative, I don't drive like a nervous nelly, I regularly do about +5 over the speed limit, but the fastest I've gone is 80 mph, and didn't want to push it further than that until I've got all my maintenance ducks in a row; also an alignment, as I sometimes get a bit of a "shimmy" up front, but that's another topic entirely.

Sounds too easy lol

Where do you get the Red Line break in additive? Summit?

Any insight on Valvoline MaxLife Full Synthetic? Read a few good reviews elsewhere, and Valvoline has been a trusted brand within the family for yearsss. Seems that MaxLife FS is hard to find though.

They're not really competing technologies, nor, strictly speaking, are old style RP and a modern API oil true competitors. The Synerlec additive is something that they don't have in the latest SN/GF-5 versions of RP; I believe it bumps up phosphorus levels. So, if it has Synerlec, it's either the new non-API rated stuff, or the older SL versions, both of which have plenty of ZDDP. So, they don't need a "substitute" for ZDDP such as titanium.
