Castrol wants you to switch to Syntec

Those other oils may be good, but, they're not purple.

I'm dissapointed that Castrol charges the same amount for their Group 3 as others charge for Group 4's or better. I don't doubt that it's good oil, maybe even close to being equal, but why not pass some savings onto the consumer instead of padding their own wallets.
I wouldn't pay $3000 for a Timex watch that tells time almost as good as a Rolex. Stop trying to gouge people. Go out, hire some engineers, and step up to the plate with a top line product. Or drop the price a couple bucks and sell twice as much. Most people are stupid, but not everyone is.

If you don't like Castrol then don't buy it. Geesh why argue about it.

The interesting thing is, I hear the current Mobil 1 is not 100% pao anymore and hasn't been for a few years now. How many of you diehard Mobil 1 users have called up mobil and asked it its 100% pao? Afraid of what they might tell you?

This old saga of Syntec being cheaper and inferior group III **** is getting quite old.

I tend to side with Vad on this one, the phrase "it's only a Grp III" is getting old.

Group III 130+ VI base oils have excellent high temperature qualities, and with additives, provide very good to excellent cold temp properties.

Castrol Syntec is a premium PCMO - saying that it is overpriced is a rather subjective statement. What does a gallon of VHVI, fully hydro-cracked Grp III base oil sell for?

Obviously, may consumers do not agree, that $5 a quart is too much for a Grp III synthetic, just look at the popularity of the Amsoil XL 7500 product line of motor oil.

People you really need to get off this castrol bashing. Use what your car likes best not what people say is the best. Whatever that oil may be!

tamu_man, it seems like a pattern now.
Your hatred towards Syntec is clouding your mind.

Michael, you were still in diapers probably, but back when this site first started their were 2 UOA's of M1 going 30k and 35k miles. Rare yes, and using a bypass filter. Mobil 1 was always field tested out to 25k miles and was originally a 25k mile oil.

Do a search on Syntec and you'll find that most US Syntec UOA's show low TBN, at least the few that I have looked at. Not impressive for a $5qt oil IMO. I'm not saying Castrol is bad oil as their really is no such thing, but I do think it's over priced and I do think M1 is better across the board.

Buster i'm sure the formulation has changed since those 2 LONG intervals. For most consumers with alot of warranty miles left it would be wise to stick with the manufacturers recommended OCI. Sure mobil 1 is a great oil maybe the best but it is skyrocketing in price. If US syntec is overpriced for what it is you must make the same argument for mobil1. Mobil1 is great oil but when is enough enough? Regular M1 is almost $6 by me with EP being over $6. Everybody talks so much about price and mobil1 is too expensive now. THE ARGUMENT ABOUT THE TBN I THINK IS SOMEWHAT FLIMSY. yOU NEED TO LOOK AT TBN FOR EACH INDIVIDUAL UOA. Each motor is different. I am a us syntec user for 1 reason only. I can get 5w20 syntec for $1 less than regular M1 even $1.25 in some instances. I will change at 5000 miles regardless so the LONG intervals argument is moot for me.

speedtc, I don't disagree with what you just said and yes Mobil 1 is getting to the point where it's very close to being over priced, if you drain it too soon. It's on par with Amsoil in terms of price and cheaper then RL so I don't think it's quite overpriced YET, but getting close to being. It's not the best oil for every situation, but M1 is a very good oil.

This thread started about a quick-lube promotion. Most of those customers are going to come in every 3000 miles anyway. Who cares if it is not quite as good as M1 or RP?

BP Lubricants USA has a basic problem in that Castrol may be a top-selling brand for the DIY market, I have never seen a quick-lube with a Castrol sign out front. Pennzoil, Valvoline, Chevron and Mobil are the ones that I see locally. Castrol is also not used by most new car dealerships. Only independent repair shops seem to feature Castrol.

As fewer people change oil themselves, getting your bulk product into quick-lubes and new car dealer service departments becomes more important.

michael wan i ran mobil one when it first came to nz in the late '80's, the advertising krap said 40,000 kilometres from memory, i had high oil use problems about half way thru and will NEVER do an extended OCI again
1983 rwd 1300cc toyota corrolla 80,000 kilometres, ambient temp +10 c - +25 c, mobil 1 20/50 (from memory)

I would like to make two points.

If you change your oil every 3000 miles than plain old GTX is the best oil for 99% of drivers (with regards to castrol's lineup)

Castrol's group III oil may be great, the thing that bothers me about castrol (and all group III makers for that matter) is that they insist on maintaing the 3000 mile interval. I do not think a group III oil will stand up to an extended run like a group IV would.

Mobil has a 15,000 mile warrenty on it Mobil 1 EP. Now the Castrol (or penz, valvoline etc) people could say that this warenty is not worth the paper it is written on. If that was the case than why don't the other oil companies follow suite? I would imagine it is because there group III oil would have trouble making it 15,000 miles!
