Just took advantage of the advanced auto castrol deal. Besides the German stuff you don't hear many people talk about castrol syntec around here. I guess that could be a good thing though. I looked over at the VOA section and its seems like the 5w-40 stuff is decent with average levels of additives (well the couple VOAs suggest that). Anyone had luck with the 5w-40 flavor? I only go 5000 miles in my truck so I'm sure it will be more that adequate.

Castrol makes a darn fine oil. I would only use it if it was on sale because it is over priced the rest of the time IMO.

I am going to do a used oil analysis with rotella 5w-40 at 1000, 3000 and 5000 miles to see what I see. After that I will try the castrol and see how it stands up in an old school flat tappet V8.

I am going to do a used oil analysis with rotella 5w-40 at 1000, 3000 and 5000 miles to see what I see. After that I will try the castrol and see how it stands up in an old school flat tappet V8.
If most of the LR community is off roading or pulling most of the time or at least a good amount of time, then I totally would be in the same boat of not crossing 5k OCI's. If it's reg. driving, then yeah, over 5k is nothing to worry.
Castrol does make some darn fine oil. I'm really surprised with Edge myself.

Rover v8 will run forever, if maintained. Being an older design- late 1950's GM design first used in 1961, it has been referred to as a dirty (oil gets dirty)engine due to its older design.
My '95 RRC ran great on Rotella T Synthetic 5w40. I usually ran Max-Life or RTS in it with good results. 5w-40 is year around choice for ROW, U.S. was 5w30 winter and 10w30 summer for my year.

My dad had a Range Rover. Never failed on him once. The English will sneak a few good ones you know.
What does he run for fuel? Bangers & Mash?
They are OK, over priced and usually it is the smaller things that go wrong with them like electronics, window regulators etc. The engines/Transmission are very good generally aside from leaking oil.
The used to have a lot of timing chain problems in earlier models because they liked to use multiple chains to drive all kinds of things. The chains would get sloppy and start banging into each other then all heck broke loose and would take out the engine. (This might be Jaguar) Can't remember. Something English anyways...

I love my disco but they definitely are demanding little brats. They did not get their reputation for nothing. If you don't bring your a-game maintenance-wise, then forget about it.
