I am doing a oil change for my buddy. He drives 50 miles a day. Car is a 2000 Corolla. Would 4 qts of Castrol Start up last 5k miles or should I use Synpower. The filter will be Napa Gold

Just about ANY good dino oil will get you 5K EASILY. The days of across the board 3K oil changes are over. Save yourself some money and rest assured.

Read this UOA ---> Corolla with GTX for 5.8k miles

Same engine same 50 mile commute.

Here is another ----> 4,900 miles on Pennzoil conventional.

Same engine same commute.. (you get the idea)

And these are in worst weather conditions that you'll ever see in FL.

Take care, bill

Also I think I want to get rid of some of my odd lot bottles. I have 1 qt of Valvoline premium left. I think 3 qaurts of a mix of Start up and Synpower I never used. Should I just toss out hte 3 qt of brew,

I mixed in my mom's last OCI. 3 quarts of Mobil Clean 5000, 1.1 quarts of Valvoline, and 1/2 quart of Valvoline MaxLife and it didn't hurt a thing. I wouldn't worry, as long as it's all rated the same.

Man thats a ---- of a home brew how long was that in the engine for

3,000 miles (usually every 2 months). My mom mostly does short trips so I change it relatively early for her. As for rating, I meant the API rating (SL, SM, etc.).

o I am a Noob, and have no clue on API rating. Can you start me off in the right direction.

bigbull,

If you want to try Valvoline "Synpower" then you made a wise choice. I'll never go back to dino unless I can't afford synthetic oil anymore. Persoanlly my dealership offers Mobil 1 so I just have them put that in my 89' Camry with over 200K and it's still going strong. Consider it as your Corolla can use all the protector possible.

I amjust going to use the 4 qt homebrew I have left in this car. its 3qt synpower and one start up

Oh, yeah home brews are a blast!

I had several qts of oddball oil laying around here from freezer tests and one day, while doing an oil change on the family Tahoe I dumped in...1qt BMW synth, 1qt Syntec 5w30, 1qt GC, 1qt Syntec 5w50 and 1qt Syntec 5w20.

That corporate V8 absolutely loved it!!! The piston slap that these engines are so famously known for was completely gone....

My recent oil change used up some of the odd quarts I had on hand: 1 qt Startup 10w-40, 2 qts MC 5w-20, ~1/3 qt Syntec 5w30, ~1/3 qt GC 0w-30, 1 small bottle of Synergen Oil treat, almost 1 qt of Havoline Syn 10w30, and maybe 6-8 oz of LC.

All into a 6cyl '96 Honda. Engine just purrs along. Previous OC was 6 mos and a little less than 3000 mi on Syntec 5w30, and oil came out black as diesel with that red tinge to it and is about the 3rd change since an ARx treatment. Think i am set for winter.
