What's everyones opinion on Castrol GTX? I got my oil changed with it the other day because itw was $2 cheaper than Valvoline for some reason (which I thought was odd - I had always thought Castrol was chaper than Valvoline).

Also, is the anti-sludge thing true or is it just a marketing gimmick? It's not going to start making my 85k mile engine leak like it would if I switched to a synthetic, is it?

Before I became a synthetic oil convert( Royal Purple )I used nothing but GTX and even sold it when I worked auto parts. It never gave me a problem and I was hard on my engines back then as I was a punk kid in High School with a hot rod. I also did not change it as often as I should have to boot. IMO it is an excellent Dino oil. Actually, on my new vehicles if I do not go immediately to RP when I do the 1st OC between 1500-2000 miles I always use GTX and run it to 5K which is when I always will start using RP at the latest.

I'm using 5w30 GTX currently in my '02 Subaru WRX. It's currently in an Auto-Rx rinse phase and I was able to get the oil at a good price on sale. Seems to be a fine oil! It won't be in there for extended OCIs but I wouldn't have any problems using it again.

I agree

I know many folks who use GTX with great results. Im debating if im going with dino or stick with synthetic...if i choise dino GTX is what im going to use.

The additive packs in valvoline and castrol are similar. The differences between the two would not be that great. Buying whichever one you can find cheaper is not a bad way to go.

The anti-sludge advertising campaign is advertising. Yes GTX helps control sludge, but so does walmart supertech. Your engine will not start leaking just because you use GTX.

Before I became a Amsoil addict gtx was I used.i agree with nh silverado,I used to pound the [censored] out my cars with gtx in the sump.never spun a bearing.

For whatever reason my old high mileage minivan uses GTX at about a quart over a 5K OCI. GTX is the only oil that does this. Supertech, pennzoil, exxon superflow, QS.....nothing. GTX burns about a quart.

There is no king of oils any more.

If you drive a regular commuter car, and you change your oil regularly, you will get good results out of any motor oil that meets the API specs.

Buy what is on sale.

GTX is as good as any major motor oil out there. I have used it in my Dodge Ram the 5W-20 varity. I also have used Valvoline, Chevron and Pennzoil. For some reason I always take an slight MPG hit with Castorl. About .2-.4 MPG compaired to others. But I buy on sale. I can live with it.

If i wouldn't run synthetic i would probably run Gtx.
My dad ran Gtx in his car for 14 years and recently switches to GTX high milage and car runs good. There is a bearing sound when using 5-30 in the winter but i mean its a chevy and its 14 years old. Pretty good engine for a chevy
