Hello,

First time post but I read the forum everyday.

My question is regarding Castrol GTX. Is this a detergent oil? Napa has a decent sale on this oil but Advance Auto Parts has this listed as non-detergent. When I look at the TDS for GTX, it says that it cleans away sludge and prevent new sludge.

Currently run PYB, to me it shears out quickly and from reading about GTX, its not suppose to. I just want to make sure that GTX will do some cleaning.

Thanks

There is non-detergent Castrol and detergent Castrol, and the bottles are labelled clearly. If you're buying a multigrade Castrol, as in 5w-30, it's going to be detergent. If you're buying SAE 30, though, you'd have to take a closer look.

Almost every single motor oil you find on the store shelf will be detergent oil. My Wal-Mart doesn't have a single quart of non-detergent oil. They used to carry it, but I can't find it anymore. My local parts store had hundreds and hundreds of quarts of motor oil, but only had two quarts of non-detergent motor oil in the entire store, and it was on the bottom shelf near the spare nuts and bolts.

Pennzoil has a better "cleaning" additive package than Castrol if that is what you are after. Castrol "marketing" has bamboozled you into thinking that it cleans away sludge or grime better than any other plain Jane oil on the market. They market heavily.

Thanks, would be either 5w30 or 10w30.

With PYB car just doesn't feel as smooth at the 2k mark. I know some of this is just from the car being used. Was just going to try Castrol to see how it does

So you are qualified to determine through smoothness that an oil shears out quickly, but you can't tell if an oil is detergent or not?

I'm certainly not qualified to measure viscosity, I can't tell by any subjective observation whether an oil is within spec or has deviated (one way or another).

If you're saying the old oil you drain out seems thin that could be because of fuel dilution (year & make of vehicle?) or just because it's warm.
Brand of oil probably has nothing to do with it.

2000 Ford Escort SE using 10/30
- I've had this care for about 6 years, previous owner didn't take the right OCI, you can see some sludge and varnish, not as bad as it used to be. I have to add about 1/2 of quart of oil within the 3koci

I also have 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse (bought new) and it constantly runs smooth through the OCI (currently has QS Defy SL, this car seems to like QS products the most). Has 100k miles and doesn't burn a drop of oil, internals very clean no varnish

PYB, especially in the 10w30 flavor, is one of the best conventionals you can get for the money IMO. I don't think your Ford Escort is shearing it down below what is safe.

You should be able to go 5k easily even with your dirty engine.

Probably my imagination then. I'll just stick with PYB. Trying to get all the vechiles on the same oil.

PYB is the better oil IMO and Tractor Supply has it on sale for $2.99/qt compared to Napa at $3.39 for GTX. Just saying...

The big issue is that Castrol is BP and I will not purchase BP products.

Why especially 10w30?

Blow off Napa and get your GTX 5 quart jug at Walmart. Better prices 365,and the Walmarts here have all Castrol products on rollback right now.

I got to ask. What do you have against BP?

Castrol GTX was go-to conventional oil back in the day, at least around me it was. Now PYB is the go-to conventional oil, based on a lot of internet speculation on it's possible composition being based on excess GTL base stock. Just speculation (that I was part of), you can read about it here

http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/topics/3864452/1

Both are high quality, name brand conventional oils. I would happily use either.

With an older car, you may be interested in some of these high mileage (HM) oils
http://www.pqiamerica.com/June 2014/consolidated highmileage2014.html

If you are interested in GTX, give it a go for one oil change, if you like it then stick to it, if you prefer the PYB then change back to that next time.

In the PQIA HM oil tests linked to above, the Valvoline MaxLife is a semi-synthetic and has a very good reputation, I would give that a try too.

Then decide for yourself in your own car: PYB, GTX or MaxLife. All good oils, none will let you down.
