Castrol GTX

It is a fine oil, I have used it off and on depending on sales.

Most conventional oils now contain some group 3 in their blend to meet SN requirements, the line between semi-syn and conventional is thinner than before.

Which one, GTX 5/30, 10/40 or 15/40? They also have some HM versions of GTX.
Castrol Magnetec which is only sold in the EU as far as I am aware is slightly better, but GTX is still a good oil if you don't use it for too long. Castrol Edge is better for longer OCI's.
This is the list of GTX HM oils:

I find Castrol oils to be darker and thicker then most oils.

Other then that it's one of the top tier conventional oils.

Castrol makes a great conventional oil.

That's interesting as it has a lot of Sodium, probably Sodium Sulphonate, which I presume is used as a dispersant and anti corrosive.
I don't like oils with Sodium compounds, because it makes detecting a head gasket coolant leak from a UOA more difficult.

Hi,
Dually - Castrol's GTX designation has been around since the early 1970s.

It is their "bulk"consumer product. Castrol/BP have kept it up to date with basic API ratings and it is a good product in its intended applications. Now that BP is 50% (part) owned by the World's largest Oil Co (Russian) I expect it will contine as it has for the last 40 or so years

It has good "shelf" recognition amongst the average purchasers

It's on par with most other OTS dino oils. You should have no issues using it, though I would not pay extra for it.

I used it for 20 some thousand miles in my Ex V8, 5,000 mile oci's. and when it was torn down for a head gasket replacement the engine internals were very clean.

But GTX SynBlend is probably a better value at just $2 more for a jug at Walmart.

.....and why might that be?

It has an "X" in its name that follows "GT?"

personally not a fan. back 5-10 years ago it was pretty much the only oil on sale down here in the south, but that has changed thankfully for the better.

I saw a motor torn down after 100k of castrol gtx and it was pretty sludged up. It was a 350 out of a 94 Z71 and the guy always changed it oil every 3000-3500. Motor was rebuilt at that point and all he has run since then is Mobil 1. Truck now has 340k and it runs like a champ. Hard to argue with results!

I doubt the oil was at fault. I recommend you research a bit before you post something like that.
Also Pennsylvania crude has a lot of wax in it for candle's.
